DSG woes in The Age

The car that resulted in the unfortunate womans death probably suffered the 'wastegate' problem and dropped into 'limp home' mode. Both my brother and I bought Polos late in 2010, mine DSG and his manual.

FWIW got my Octavia back today from the dealer, was in for warranty work on the fog light assy. and also for them to check why when at the lights in manual mode stopped, when I put my foot down to go the car went no where, flipped into D and still no where, into S and again same thing. Into Park car off then back on and all good.

They advised today when I picked it up that they will change the mechatronic unit (clutch packs were done a month ago)

Wife's car in today for shuddering and hard changes of gears and advised same thing tonight... Clutch packs and new Mechatronic.

Both clutch packs done under warranty but mechatronics will be done under recall. Problem is no one seems to know when that will be.

Both cars are less than 40000km and a MY10 and MY11 118TSI

Both my brother and I bought Polos late in 2010, mine DSG and his manual. At around 20-25kkms, after down hill or run down, it seems the wastegate sticks and engine losses power. Mine did it several times and once couldn't get up a hill, changed down to first, eventually coming to a stop with clutch slipping. My brother's city dealer knew the problem immediately, had parts and repaired promptly (Bullatin 24V9). My country dealer knew nothing about it and took three weeks to get the part. It's a great little car with cutting edge technology but owners can't be expected to pay for on road R&D after warranty. At least now VW Australia have taken their head out of the sand and prepared to fix known production problems so I'll give them a fair go and keep the car.

The car in the accident was a Golf.

An interesting side note.

I'm selling a manual golf R at the moment. I have had a number of enquiries from people who start off with "I was looking at DSG ones, but thought better of it"

So not every VW owner is disadvantaged by these issues

Law firm drops case. Almost predictable. The Age stirred up a hornets nest only to find in reality the case was likely to be lost. This ABC report also wrongly links Melissa Ryan's death to the DSG issue yet again. Poor journalism again.

That's incorrect.

That article doesn't link her death to the dsg issue at all; other than the fact that the reporting of the coronial inquest in the media resulted in lots of complaints about VWA (for all sorts of related and non-related issues) - this is fact.

There is no evidence the VW lost power... so why did they repeat the allegations again and the woman's name?

The article clearly implies a link. If not why did they mention it at all? There is no mention of the fact that DSG problems have nothing to do with the death of Melissa Ryan.

The article links the reported stalling by some owners with the apparent cutting out of Melissa Ryan's car (reported only by the person accused of causing her death):

Meh, what they reported is factual.

I met the partner of my gf's workmate who happens to be a Honda salesman. We briefly talked about the DSG recall. He said that used car wholesalers have largely rejected buying VW for trade ins. Said it's on a case to case basis and depends on the wholesaler. In Canberra, out of the 4 wholesalers they deal with, 3 at the moment have flat out refused to buy VW's. Only one are buying but they are picky or are lowballing owners.

His suggestion was to wait it out a few months or better yet sell next year.

The lawyer for Ms Ryan's family is quoted as saying: "They are firmly of the belief that there was a problem with the car, their belief is partly because of what they have found along the way, and partly because of the way that VW has conducted itself throughout the process of the investigation".

He continued: "Right from the start VW has been less than forthcoming and that has made the family more suspicious."

Clearly, they will never learn.

From memory she had a GTI which doesn't have the engine shutdown issues that the TDI injectors cause.
You may get a coilpack go but it won't shut down the engine will it?
