Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I think the recall will be extended after these cars are fixed, we must be a little diplomatic here...26,000 units isn't something you can whip up in a day...plus there is still 200k plus overseas already waiting for these parts...perhaps they will widen the recall once they reduce the amount of backlog? 2008-2010 then 2011-current?

Fair point and I truly hope that is the case. Ok, happy Gavs for the rest of the day now

              • From the Govt. Recall Site:
                What are the defects?
On vehicles within a certain production period with the 7 speed direct shift gearbox (DSG), electrolysis in the gearbox control unit can lead to a short circuit and blow the gearbox fuse. If the fuse blows, the clutch will open and there will be total loss of power to the wheels.
                What are the hazards?
If the defect occurs there will be a sudden and total loss of power to the wheels, which in some circumstances may pose a hazard to the vehicle occupants and other road users.
                --
                From the VGA notice:
...Vehicles affected include Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy and were produced between June 2008 and September 2011..
In isolated cases, an electronic malfunction in the control unit inside the gearbox mechatronics may result in a power interruption. Other important vehicle systems, such as steering and braking, along with other relevant systems, will continue to be fully functional. If, in rare cases, the car loses power while driving, the driver can remain in control to safely manoeuvre the car to a stop.
Volkswagen Group Australia will replace the gearbox mechatronic unit on all potentially affected vehicles at no cost to the customer. At the same time, we will also update customers’ vehicles with the latest software version.
Starting from July, owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted directly by Volkswagen Group Australia about the voluntary recall.
                ----
NB: Nothing under Audi or Skoda ("other brands") on the recalls site

This doesn't sound like a lot of the DSG issues, but is concerning to say the least

Owning a 6 speed DSG, I believe VW should extend warranties for DSG to a minimum of 5 years. This would cover cars back to 2009 and give many owners peace of mind that they wont have to drop 5k+ into repairing a car that's under 5 years old.

                  • I've read lots about a 5 year warranty being offered but have not seen anything in writing from VWA. Is there an authorative source on this ??

On their website but in only applies to specific vehicles. Conjecture between vehicles still with new vehicle warranty or only on new vehicles... See here for exact statement:

                      • No doubt everyone has read the Government Recall Site list - all VW's excluding Tiguan.

May it be assumed Tiguans are not affected, or is that a Government typing error ?

Tiguan is one of the few Vw's to use the DQ500 DSG box due to the higher torque requirements/soft-roading apparently.

Exactly - the link on their site is targeted at potential buyers, not existing owners.

If there's a typo - it's from VW's notification to the government - no Tiguan

I guess we'll see updates on the Recall website for Audi and "other brands" in the coming days.

Having a look at the "other brands" is fun too.
