Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • Hey that guy with the Polo TSI (top video). I'm pretty certain he has a problem with his engine - or engine related as contained within the engine control module. Not his DSG...(I'm in no way saying the DSG is faultless becuase mine has its fair share of retardation to annoy me)

But just saying the engine light doesn't come on for gearbox ONLY issues (as far as I know, happy to be corrected though) only the gear position and service light wrench flash - which means the engine control unit is effecting gearbox operation.

By the looks of it, it is not recognising that he is depressing the brake so the brake pedal which could be trippng up the gearbox not allowing to shift into a gear (this has been a confirmed problem) or one of the sensors in the engine that are required to make the gearbox shift with the engine timing is playing up.

You have to remeber these gearboxes run off of over hundreds of position sensors. If one plays up its either the engine or gearbox that will go nuts.

Also when I start my car it goes from 0 right up to 1100rpm and then down to idle. With his you can see it hover at 50rpm until it starts then go up to 900rpm. Could be different software displaying the revs but I think it could be using a different engine speed sensor.

Hi Hail22, Thank you so much for the videos, I think that gives us all a lot of thought about what some people are going through.

          • What's with the flashing gear position indicator? Also my MFD shows a fully formed gear position indicator, but some of these videos show a 7 segment LED/LCD character display.

Let's hope that these clips are not just to show there is a "problem" like the one with the Touareg and the key that would not go in with the engine running.

Only 1840km. And it doesn't look like heat is much of a problem with this one, as the ambient is 9.5c and the water temp is <90c

As for the flashing gear, I've not experienced this kind of false neutral (flashing light, or standing still, but have seen the one in the third Video), does hitting the brake help? Since the sign is up for him to do it, but he's not actually hitting it.

              • I had the gear number/letter flash when the issue would affect my polo TDI. It required putting it into park and restarting the engine to move again. It seemed to happen mostly in 'manual' or 'sport' but 'drive' didn't do it as much. I think I saw this video when I got home after it affected me then I realised I wasn't the only one...

It's currently 5:27AM local in Wolfsburg Germany (Tuesday), Knowing VW the smartest play is to release a recall on Wednesday night.

They have to also organise paperwork and tender legal paperwork to the ACCC / Department of Transport and infrastructure of the "so called" recall that is being undertaken so that the ACCC / Department can then issue it on their website of what the expected outcomes are for this "recall".

A lot of pencil pushing to go!

                    • Well The Age just interviewed me over the phone about the MKV 125kw diesel injector issue, so it seems VW are copping it from all angles, the media isn't done with them yet. I am told certain letters are going out "from the head of VW Australia", but as to what they say, and more importantly admit to, we shall see.

The lass from The Age did tell me they have had over 300 people contact them about DSG problems since the article.

Sorry VW, you had the chance to do the right thing, on the diesels at least, YEARS ago.

Time zones do not mean much. I setup the drawing office for a German company here in Australia, and the MD here and his counterpart in Germany (and any needed staff) were available 24/7. They would have pulled a couple of all-nighters if necessary.

Given that it is Australia, you would think they would have pulled out all stops. Also, remember the Germans do not celebrate the Queen's Birthday, and even the UK had the Queen's Birthday holiday a few weeks ago.

In the interests of calming Australian customers, they should have clearly signalled their intentions with the details to be worked out. By leaking a supposed hint of what they might do, they quietened things down for a couple of days.

There is still a hell of a lot of spin going on.

That doesn't mean 300 people with problems. Thats newsspeak for a lot of people ringing in with various questions about the DSG story. Maybe some were complaining about the article, who knows? In the USA a similar investigation resulted in only 149 people with issues out of 10s of thousands of DSG owners. The NHTSA dropped the investigation in the end. When the fuss dies down, the actual numbers of people with demonstrable problems will be relatively few.

How many complainants have either 1. Not had their car serviced on time 2. Added performance software or other engine mods to their vehicle. 3. Have had their services done by other than VW garages? These factors will come into play for any legal claims made.

DSG problems in my MY09 MKV Golf GTI, new mechatronics fitted under warranty. No mods and serviced by VW dealer

DSG problems in my MY12 MKVI R, yet to be totally resolved. No mods (at time of reporting problem at 1500Km)

                              Maybe I am just unlucky?

                              • Nah mate, from a legal perspective they are clearly not "demonstrable problems" & all the people like your are relatively (to something) few!
