My experience as well. Engine was a bit too much for the chassis.

Lotus Evora makes good use of the Toyota engine.

It's relevance will vary on the individual, but it's a very reasonable measure of a car's outright acceleration capability at low speeds. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's quite a valid criterion, but it's a rather specific test - and is by no means the only criterion in measuring a car's performance.

But it is what it is. There's really no need to read too much into it.

The 40-120kmh is probably more relevant to the average driver. Merging onto freeways etc...

My GTI feels very quick in this space. Almost too quick. By the time you start to enjoy the acceleration you're already into loss of license territory.

Notice I said "almost". No such thing as "too quick".... lol

Motor magazine December 2012 managed a 6.12 out of a stock GTI DSG.

The raw power figures don't tell the full story. With a consistently fast gearbox, good launch control and a good diff the GTI gets it to the ground quite well.
I'm guessing those figures are at the flywheel.

I'm hearing quite a few defensive GTI drivers.

When my GTI (not a Golf) was stock, it put out 110kw. Not going to smoke much with that power. GTI does not mean much IMO, I don't think of VW's as fast cars. Audi make a range of cars, with some fast ones thrown into the mix if you have the cash.

yeah.... with the money i put down on the bora, i could've picked up an old v8 holden or ford easy..... but i didn't. 1. Fuel would have bankrupted me. 2. I like a bit of class. 3. Bora feels a bit sportier (person who sold it to me also had a VT Calais, which had a good 30kw more power, but still preferred the chassis of the dub). 4. Not many of them around.

don' think vw drivers think purely in terms of power. They want a nice mix of performance and fun -- kind of like a nice cocktail on a friday night

Sure the Aurion is probably quicker than the GTI, but I think the golf being turbocharged would make it a bit easier to live with everyday such as not having to downshift when overtaking on the highway etc and the GTI is probably more fuel efficient as well. The GTI would most likely leave the Aurion for dead when it comes to the twisties. In a straight line though, those large, cheap V6 and V8 sedans would leave stock GTIs and nearly all other 'hot'-hatches for dead. But anyway, as others have said I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be considering an Aurion if you are looking at getting a Golf GTI.

If I were in the market for a large, quick sedan it would be a Passat V6 4motion with sports pack. Infinitely classier and more elegant than, and just as fast as an SS or XR6T. Around similar money too.

Yes, but at $56490 (add $1300 for the sports package), you have to pay for it. Class, elegance and a German badge are certainly nice to have, but they don't come cheap.

If you can live without the classy, elegant interior and a German badge, the Commodore SS gets you into a V8 for $47790, while the Falcon XR6 Turbo is $46235. A RWD drivetrain comes standard, but add $2000 for an automatic gearbox. Objectively speaking, they're good value for money.

You certainly won't feel short-changed if you can afford to spend extra on a European car (there are other qualities to a car than just straight-line performance), but again, you have to pay for it.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. If you were to buy an SS or an XR6T, optioned to a level which brings it's specifications and features to a comparable level of the Passat Highline V6 DSG 4-Motion, they would be similar pricing (by similar, I mean within 5-10%).

Being the owner of several European cars, I am certainly aware of the benefits.

Haha I do see the odd Aurion owner that thinks he's Sebastien Vettel. You'd lose them after 3 corners of a twisty road though.

Wouldn't Webber be cheerful if Vettel did indeed drive an Aurion.

I have thought about a tune but I can't be bothered spending the money. It is illegal to drive fast on a public road so why bother if that's the only place you drive it. I sometimes wonder why I bought a GTI and not a GT Sport/GTD.

I've been out on track in my Clio 172 before with a (non-TRD) Aurion. I could barely see the thing at the end of the straight at QR, but was back on his tail exiting turn 2, where I stayed until the straight. I vowed to never go to sprints on a Sunday again
People who enjoy driving generally don't buy Aurions...

No. It's not illegal to drive fast. It's illegal to exceed the speed limit. Different things.

You can get the car working well through a corner and punch out without breaking any road rules at all.

If you don't get that, then the Toyota dealership is that way.
