  • Aurion quicker than a GTI, really?

So I was reading through the Showroom section of Wheels magazine trying to decide which car I'd like next.

Inspecting the 0-100km times I noticed that the Aurion was quicker than a Golf GTI? Is that true? I recall driving an Aurion a few years back that was a rental and I admit it was surprisingly quick. But it's really just a V6 camry.

I also read that the Ralliart Lancer is quicker than the GTI as well which was also a surprise. Less so though I'll admit

Maybe I've just spent too much time in VW land and these forums and I've lost track of the real world.

Stock GTI's (and R's for that matter) are actually pretty slow as a standard car.

I remember when i test drove an R before buying one i was pretty unimpressed with the performance out of the box. Luckily a tune and a few goodies changes that.

I'm not surprised by that, I felt my gti was significantly slower than some of the cars I test drove prior to getting the dub. But as its been said, it's not all about speed, the gti is a better all round package IMO.

As has been mentioned, the GTI's no gun. However, I also wouldn't trust Wheels magazine (or a number of the other mainstream car mags) to be able to produce a decent acceleration time, and VW's own figures - like many German marques - are conservative. IIRC Motor's managed a 6.1 recently, but ~6.5 is a decent estimate for a DSG.

Yes, it's not how fast you go, but how do you go fast.

Adams bang on. there well over what's actually doable. Polo GTI 0-100 is 6.9 according to vw but I've managed a high 6.6 using the same measuring equipment the magazines use. Took about 10 attempts to get the launch right and with enough of a break in between for it to cool back down. But you can't retry on the street if you stuff it.

                The Golf R (131 kW/tonne) and Aurion (129 kW/tonne) have near identical power-to-weight ratios.

I suppose it isn't that surprising, considering it has a 200 kW 3.5 litre V6 to work with.

In contrast, the GTI produces 111 kW/tonne, so I wouldn't get into a traffic-light drag race with one if you could help it.

Nothing will change the fact that the Aurion is one of the most hideous looking land barges on the market today though...

The figures in Wheels were their "as tested" figures so not the manufacturer claims. 4 pots vs 6 makes the difference in this comparison but it's the perception that surprised me. I guess the cops drive Sportivo's around for a reason. Cheap performance without stepping up to an SS/XR6T.

Even the R isn't overly quick and I've read that the Scirocco is quicker due to less weight but Wheels own figures don't back that up.

Perhaps I'm expecting too much. I just don't like the fact that a "hot" hatch is slower than a car that is related to a Camry. It's bad enough that stock Falcadores can be quicker, depending on the model.

Mercedes have the answer with A45 but sheesh the price goes with it!

At least with the GTI and R there are performance inhancements to be hade and made. I've seen nothing for a aurion or Camry besides horrible Japanese bolt one bling.

There's easy supercharger bolt on's. or you could just get the TRD version.

Does it really matter that the Toyota Aurion is faster than a Golf GTI? The probability of getting smoked by one at the lights is almost nil, due to the Aurion's target audience. Besides, if straight-line speed was everything, you'd buy a bike.

$2000 worth of tune and intake gear and you'll be in V8 HSV/Ford F6 league. Never mind the Aurion. Plus pretty much any hot hatch will be a more fun drive. Even though it's quick in a straight line, the Aurion is still a big heavy family car.
