Banging is a legitimate way of getting something to work/fix something sometimes.
This is why I dont like customers watching me work on their cars. You never get to bring out the really big hammer
After careful consideration I have to make a reply on the situation gti007 has brought up. I have spoken to a friend who works at Volkswagen and so the story is this. The up in question was an auto unit not yet supplied here in Australia. It did not start!! now with all there special equipment they chose to disregard using it and began to hit the starter motor to no avail. When if they had proceeded to use the genuine computer they would have noticed that no gear input was being read so in easy terms vehicle did not know if it was in park of neutral to authorize a start procedure. I agree with many members who agree with percussive maintenance but for a company to have guys hitting before thinking is totally stupid. Volkswagen makes sure that all dealerships carry out proper checks and work and are enforced by there regional managers maybe they should start looking at themselves if they have guys banging away. Will the damaged starter now be replaced???
