Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The HKS Kit has a massive dip in the torque curve, it isn't smooth at all :|
I believe they have other issues as the compression is quite high which could lead to detonation and it's harder to get big power from FI with a compression of 10.5:1.

GT Supercharger kit: 236.8ps/6300rpm and 27.0kgf・m/5600-6600rpm

    Normal: 184.7ps/6800rpm and 20.3kgf・m/4700rpm

Note, torque is the top lines.

    • Hmmm interesting. Plus the article on the Tenko turbo 86 says they run 12:1 CR (stock unopened engine not 10:5.1) on 12psi with no dramas.

If the power isn't getting to the wheels then how could you judge in which manner the dynamics have changed??
        They are losing 30%?

That's about what my AWD Liberty was losing. It must be a very ineffecient drivetrain.

They say these FA engines, are the tits are far superior engine to the EJ.

Many are already spewing out big numbers, a d quick 1/4's on the stock gearbox.

There's a couple even getting around in Sydney..

            • Boxters are the ultimate hairdresser's cars in my opinion.

Anyone considering a budget-priced exotic marque needs their head checked - running costs are high compared to the initial used car purchase price, so what is the point of buying a budget car?

All it says to people is "look at me I can afford [the least desirable] porsche".

I would personally still take the 86 over a boxter, but the 86 is not really my sort of car to tell the truth.

Hasn't there been a million of these "alternative to the 86" comparisons?

I think both vehicles have a place in somebodies garage.

Sure the 86 probably hasn't lived up to the marketing hype but for some people, this might be the only viable route into a front engined, rear drive vehicle that has some sporty aspirations. I know that it would be the only vehicle of that type available to my wife as a company drive as it has to be new & the only Euro car available is a VW. Apparently it isn't a good look to have a staff car park full of European vehicles.

Keep in mind that the Boxter is only 2 seats & this would be a deal breaker for some. Yes, the extra 2 seats in the 86 are almost useless but they can be used none-the-less.

                • Apparently the '86 convertible idea has been ditched by Toyota.

If you are a Porsche fan, nothing will sway your decision, even if it is a cheap end one. But if you don't want to look like a real estate agent or investment banker, then there is nothing wrong with the 86 or BRZ. I can't see why comparisons are being made to the 86 and other euro brands if a prestige badge is all you want. If that is the case, why not compare the GTI golf to a boxster and let that comparison open it self up to the merits or costs of that one.

Why compare a a golf GTI to a boxter? one is a fantastic all-rounder, one is a fantastic specialist ... Compare an MX5 to a boxter for sure...

I sit back and read this thread and watch people pass judgement... sure some twats buy Boxters as it is the budget entry into a Porsche badge, a lot of twats do the same thing into the euro badges when all they really deserve is a camry... ditto some may buy a GTI and drive it like a Barina and bond with it like with a microwave...

None of that stops any Boxter, Audi, Merc, Bimmer, GTI, MX5 or whatever being awesome cars in their element... and even a base Boxter is a freaken awesome device roof down (or up) through twisties... Presented with two cars of equal value i would take a used Boxter (S preferably but even a base) over a new Eos for example any day of the week, but that is my opinion.... an Eos will suit other people better still goes hard with a turbo, you can drop the roof for four, so it does not make it a $hit car.

Although I spose I am already "hairdresser" commentary immune... but because my roadster is an awesome bit of driving gear I don't care what anyone says...

Car enthusiasts should not be laying crap on other enthusiasts cars, but on the car that defines the opposite of enthusiasm and passion in driving and enjoying a car, like say... the CAMRY!

                      • Wow, this thread is still going. Have not looked in since it started.

BUT..... I have driven an 86 for the weekend.........

Honestly I was impressed with the handling. As someone who enjoys the feeling of a nice handling car more than outright acceleration it was really enjoyable for me.
Very controllable and predictable. Can push it hard through corners and have it grip, or have it slip if you like.

To the skeptics, drive it and see if you like it for yourself.
