Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I drive at Wakefield fairly regularly so I find it usefull when Motor Magazine test cars out there as it provides a benchmark I can relate to. I really want to believe the hype (boy) regarding the 86/BZR, so I was really surprised when I read the latest Motor mag and the 86 only managed a 1:16. The cars, in order were: Scirocco R - 1:12, WRX - 1:14, Clio RS - 1:14.5, 86 GTS - 1:16, Holden SV6 - 1:16.7, MX-5 - 1:17. Interesting the three slowest cars are RWD.

    • Perception could be the answer to that.

Faster times have been posted by BRZ and 86 since. However,I think some people are missing the point.
They're not supposed to be rocketships, just a great all-round drive for very reasonable money.[$30k]
I've drive both a few times, and ordered an 86 last week.
Great fun car without the need to achieve warp speed.
        Cheers

          • I think you're right and they are an okay car. I just assumed they were being touted as a more performance orientated car with great tuning potential so the lap times just surprise me a bit. Must get a drive of one one of these days.

You could look at it that way, or you could say interesting the slowest four cars are NA in decreasing order of manic-ness...

What are the laptimes in Dollars per second?

I think people who put the 86 on the track and then moan about how slow it goes kinda misses the point of the car. Cars like the Porsche Cayman/Boxster and the 86 really come into their element when you string in a number of successive corners and see how the balance of these cars carry the cars into each corner.

Mate's got one and give it some corners and it'll show its strength.. I remember ex gf's NA mx5 with adjustable coil-overs would leave cars twice as powerful behind through nebo/glorious/tambo. Sure as soon as the straight line came they overtook and went flying past till 2-3 corners and I needed a bullbar

Can't be trying. My MX5 ran 1.10's at Wakefield.

                        • My mate bought one and we just finished a 6 hour drive in it.
Handles great but, poor interior, crap stereo, and a constant metal clanging from the rear.
He mentioned that most of the cars in the 86 club have the same problem.
It sounds like the body is not finished properly...much like the interior.
and $30,000 seemsto blow out to $ 40,000 for most!
There are much better cars for less money, looks alone are not enough to buy a car.

                          • Thanks for sharing that info. I will pass it on to a few mates looking at buying one. It is a pity about the crap quality of the items you mention. Very few rear drive cars (new and in this price range) for the enthusiast.

you have to remember it's 35k plus on roads so more like 38k.
So you might as well buy a Mk6 GTI plus a tune or a focus st like in the video.
