No rumors of the Subie / Toy creation with a decent spec engine? I wonder when they will come up with a 2.0T or 1.8T to make it sing.

$170 capped servicing till 60k which is 4 services at 9 months or 15k intervals.Originally posted by team_v View PostCapped price servicing that has to occur every 6 months which adds up to more than the 1 yearly service on my VW.
Why not just buy a Runout Mk6 GTI.
There was some silly rumours that Toyota had agreement with Subaru that Subaru wouldn't release a turbo model for 2-4yrs, 4 seems stupid but 2 makes sense sortaOriginally posted by noone View PostNo rumors of the Subie / Toy creation with a decent spec engine? The 86 is a purpose built sports car from the ground up. Compared to a polo gti which is a very small car like a yaris, there is no comparison unless you really need the space. Then again the golf is the practical choice and that is what I went forCurrent ride: 2014 Range Rover Evoque 5 Door TD4 Pure | 9 Spd Auto | Fuji White | Black Leather | 19 inch 'Dynamic' Wheels
Previous rides: MY11.5 Golf GTI 5 door | DSG | Candy White | 18' Detriots | Bluetooth | K&N Air Filter | Dancing Dials (Oh Yeah!)
| 1989 Porsche 944S2 Coupe| Guards Red| Leather| Sunroof| LSD

And latest news is Toyota has axed any plans for a Turbo or Cabrio variant of the 86.

I like the design brief for the 86 and I can understand why Toyota won't offer a turbo version.
But then again it is a little underpowered (my opinion). I would prefer a supercharger to a turbo, some decent aftermarket kits around for it, this is just one option: Toyota 86 supercharger kit | review | carsguide.com.auMKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline. Just nice.

I have a few aquaintances that have bought the GT86, GTS86 & the Subaru. The GT86 & Subaru guys have left theirs stock & once they got used to a revised driving style (both had Subaru Liberty, one was a turbo) & they claim the power is adequate. The guy with the GTS86 has done some extensive mods including remapping the ECU. The basic map is written for 92ron & is biased towards fuel economy. Remapping for 98ron produces noticeable increases in power. Last time I spoke to him he was working on a map for E85 & he expected the power to exceed 200kw with inlet & exhaust mods. All 3 of them feel that going turbo would upset the balance / power delivery.Originally posted by stickshift3000 View PostI like the design brief for the 86 and I can understand why Toyota won't offer a turbo version.

An extra 10k for a supercharger pushes this car even further out of value for money though.Originally posted by stickshift3000 View PostI like the design brief for the 86 and I can understand why Toyota won't offer a turbo version.

At that price you might as well just buy a couple year old Porsche Boxter.

Sorry but your friend is dreaming. The turbo charged 86 that came second in the Motor Magazine tuner challenge that has a Garrett disco potato running higher boost sine then at 12psi only makes 197kW atw, and that's with all the supporting mods you can dream of. Pick up a current issue of Fast 4's for the full write up. And not to mention E85 will only give large gains with forced induction (sorry don't have time to explain so goggle is your friend).Originally posted by brad View PostI have a few aquaintances that have bought the GT86, GTS86 & the Subaru. I doubt you could get a Boxster a couple of years old for $50k. Last I saw, an 6-8 year old BOxster S goes for that money, not withstanding any repairs which Porsche charge half an arm and leg for.Originally posted by team_v View PostAn extra 10k for a supercharger pushes this car even further out of value for money though.

Looks like 2006 is the closest.Originally posted by Finance_Analyst View PostI doubt you could get a Boxster a couple of years old for $50k. Last I saw, an 6-8 year old BOxster S goes for that money, not withstanding any repairs which Porsche charge half an arm and leg for.
Maybe a BMW Z4 instead.
The issue is that the 86 isn't really good value for money, then you add an aftermarket FI kit which voids almost every warranty you could claim and instantly devalues the vehicle and then you get even worse value for money.

Toyota 86
Fair point although BMW reliability and servicing is a problem, plus the Z4 is plain ugly. Only one worth considering is 335i if you must have a beema, but Mercedes SLK is a good alternative and has better reliability. But I can see why the fan boys like the 86. 200kw at the crank (+30% over stock?). Not the wheels.Originally posted by VWindahouse View PostSorry but your friend is dreaming. I've seen how he tuned his Subaru. If he says he'll achieve something he generally does.
I think the main point I was trying to make was that most people that own the Toyobaru twins find the power adequate whereas people that don't own them are the ones that say they are under-powered.carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

Sorry crank - different story. However the twins loose a heap in drive train loss as they struggle to crack 100kW atw with intake and exhaust (no tune). However at the wheels figures are unfortunately what matter in this case because of you stated point about driving feel and dynamics. If the power isn't getting to the wheels then how could you judge in which manner the dynamics have changed??Originally posted by brad View Post200kw at the crank (+30% over stock?). Not the wheels.

It's the torque curve that I would like to improve (with a supercharger), not necessarily peak hp.Originally posted by brad View PostI think the main point I was trying to make was that most people that own the Toyobaru twins find the power adequate whereas people that don't own them are the ones that say they are under-powered.MKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline.
