Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Far, far too much. Is not a cheap hobby by any means.

I took a gap year working full time in an attempt to save some money for uni (which is about to start in the next couple weeks) and probably made over 20k (not much by any means but we all have to start somewhere), which the majority of went into the two cars Ive had. Current car was a $3000 mk3, which ive spent over that on the suspension for, let alone everything else for it.

Little things all add up very quickly. Would have been much better off saving in hindsight. Ohwell. **** happens.

I bought my Polo ex-demo in 2007 for about $28K, and I've spent about $25K on top of that in mods (though to be fair that includes buying a 2nd K04 after the first one died).

It's not crazy at all - why not spend your own money on something you love?

I think what is more crazy is the percentage of original purchase price. I'm well over 800% of what I paid for the car so far

Basically I've turned the Polo into a track car:

                    K04 with APR tune
                    FMIC
Custom air intake / filter / plumbing
                    LSD, upgraded clutch, lighter flywheel
                    Custom 3" turbo back exhaust
323mm Slotted Brembos, modified wheel arches for ventilation
                    Bilstein PSS9 coilovers
Rear sway bar / engine mount upgrade
                    OZ Ultraleggeras

Starting the build from scratch would save some money where I upgraded parts I'd already upgraded from stock - for instance the APR cat-back exhaust I initially installed, or the Seat intake mod replaced by the new air box.

That sounds like quite a Polo how does it go getting power down - and what sort of 0-100 does it do?

my little 15 inch wheeled girls car has cost me around $7k so far, INCLUDING replenishables like tyres and brakes (2 sets each, but tyres are cheap when you've only got to shop for 15 inch 195 section...)

looking at another couple of grand for a new clutch + install (im guessing) in the near future too... yay!

at the moment im not trying to "mod" it, per se, because i (personally) dont think that there's any point in upsetting the car's dynamic balance (which i've worked a bit to achieve, given that it's a nose heavy diesel) by adding more power, and i'm starting to think that i could spend another $10k on it and i'd only be chasing incremental gains - still wouldnt be as much of a driver's instrument as something like a clio...

so after the clutch, it's happily back to keeping it how it is, and only having to worry about maintenance

Mine would be a lot more if I had not done most of the work myself or had mates help me... That has saved me a hell of a lot in fitting labour.

                            SEAT intake: $160
                            SEAT wishbone bushes: $250
                            SEAT Cupra lip: $150
                            Porsche Twist reps: $920

All this is is less consumables such as tyres.
