P platers with Polo GTis?

I was walking near my office in Hawthorn and saw a green P Plater cut off oncoming traffic today outside Camberwell VW in a Polo GTi....apart from the D-Head comments of the people standing there as they almost bunny hopped away....I was wondering how they came to be driving it. I thought maybe its not considered a high enough powered car, but looking in the list on VicRoads they are banned for P platers. What gives?

The seller doesn't have to comply with State laws for driving restricted vehicles so the P Plater probably got one in the hope that they won't get caught.


In QLD i know if you are over 25 you can driver restricted cars even if you are on your P's.

I'm driving a a3 turbo on my p's its not something they really enforced I got pulled over for speeding the other day and cop didn't say anything bout the turbo

Yeah, to be honest, I think unless you're driving a "LOOK AT ME" Silvia or something, you should be pretty right! A3 turbos/Polo GTIs etc would probably never get a second glance.

all comes down to the individual officer really. just because one doesnt notice it, doesnt mean youre not breaking your restrictions and thus liable for any penalties there after.

Wait until a HWP officer pulls you over.

My GTI is pretty loud (visually, somewhat aurally as well) and I'm yet to have been pulled over having owned it for almost a year now.

My tyres even scrubbed pulling into a booze bus line once and the cop in front of me didn't even blink.

As mentioned before they're pre-conditioned to spot the Skyline/Silvia/Falcodore crowd for obvious reasons.

cars under mums name, and so is insurance they were willing to cover me as they do not classify it as a performance vehicle

I did get pulled over by HWP, he was a real tightass and threatened to fine me for driving in the right lane on a freeway

Something I wouldn't want to test...

On one hand your insurance company is covering YOU to drive the nominated vehicle and assume you are correctly licensed. I would suggest that they could deny the claim and say you were driving unlicensed... but like I said I don't want to find out. Same goes on the off chance you injure someone on the road, do you really want to test the "but it's only a low powered turbo" excuse on the judge?

Now in QLD you can apply for an exemption if your vehicle is under 125kW/t. At 132kW and 1,189kg the Polo GTI is ~110kW/t so could very well pass the application process. In fact the 77TSI and the GTI both have the same applications process with both cars listed as "Application Required": P1 licence (Department of Transport and Main Roads)

In NSW they are not upto date on the Polo's so they are not listed at all, I would assume the 77TSI is allowable, who knows on the GTI.

Yeah I agree it is pretty stupid to drive cars which you are banned from driving. I dont see the need to want one on your P's, wait till you know how to drive and have experence on the road, then get something more powerfull.

With the insurance, if a accident happens, well i know of someone who crashed their mums BMW and the policy stated they have to be over 30 to be covered. Guessing something like this applies if it is under a parents name, there would be conditions stated

Not saying any names, but how many mums drive turbo cars with quad exhausts, 19inch wheels, LSD and a Frankenturbo lol

yeah i know what you mean, ive had the car for 4 years now, I often hit the track and I am listed as a secondary driver and only have had one speeding ticket since I got my license 3 years ago

Everything was checked before the car was insured if I was the crash and have a letter from insurance that I am covered

I recently went down to my mechanics to order some parts and we were talking, when I got my a3 there were hardly any p plates driving turbo cars but apparently lately a lot of p platers are taking advantage of the cheap turbo cars (i.e a4 1.8T) and coming to his workshop and saying I wanna beat holdens and fords

I would say insurance won't cover anyone, not to be mean or spiteful, but it clearly says that P platers are banned from certain cars, the Polo GTi was definitely in the banned list. Insurers are going to use that with no questions asked, it's not a grey area or in their policy for interpretation, if its illegal and they find out, its easy for them to deny the claim. They aren't in the business to payout money.

There are some other Polos that you could get an exemption for, but the GTi in Vic was definitely not in that category. The way that guy drove was just begging for a cop to give him a serve, it would have qualified for both a hoon charge as well. Not sure what the penalty is for driving a banned car?

He is only meant to drive it to and from training so i can see why they pulled him over.
Also apparently he was revving the engine along the dining strip.

pretty easy to get an exemption (at least in nsw. I assume vic no different)
