  • OT: VWWATERCOOLED MUSO's....WHO'S OUT THERE AND WHAT DO YOU PLAY???

    Hey guys,

As the title states, I'd like to see how many musicians there are on our forum.

I'll get it started with my story and weapons of choice

I'm completing my Bachelor of Music at Melbourne Uni this week majoring in Performance (Trumpet).

I've been playing for 14 years and play both jazz and classical.

Current horns are a Bach Stradivarius 'Chicago' model Bb Trumpet, Yamaha Xeno 'Chicago' model C Trumpet, Schilke P6-4 Herald Bell Piccolo Trumpet and a few dodgy flugelhorns and other Bb's lying around (far from professional standard).

Let's hear what you do and what you've got!

I started on recorder (even did official exams/certification and all that)
Moved onto Piano, again with the official exams...
I dabbled with Clarinet, although never seriously.
Right now I have an electric guitar I bought at the beginning of the year... really should get round to booking some lessons

    ( I also want this: http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-US/home/ )

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I've got a diploma in music technical production.
Played drums in a pop punk band through high school
Sang for a different pop punk band which didn't get far cause the drummer couldnt record to a click track
I'm looking to play guitar in band currently

edit: should add that i'm trained in drums, guitar, vocal, trumpet, piano.

I've been playing drums since i was 9 (so 23 years.)
Studied 2yrs at UTAS Launceston doing Bachelor of Performing Arts in Jazz & Contemporary, then moved to Perth and did a Bachelor of Music in Jazz at WAAPA.

Have played in pretty much every musical style imaginable which is awesome fun.

Was a full time professional muso from '99 - '07 when i started scaling back my students and now i just concentrate on my band and the odd session or fill in gig.

Current local bands: Rock: Apollo National (JJJ unearthed), Soul: Odette Mercy & the Soul Atomics, Nujazz/Groove: The Article.

I also write, sing and play guitar.

Current gear: '71 Yamaha bop kit (18" kick), DW Pacific gig pig rock kit, '66 Slingerland Niles badge jazz kit, varios snares and cymbals new and vintage

I've been playing guitar for quite some time...
              I have several axes:
Ibanez JEM 77FP, one of Steve Vai's signature models. The picture is actually printed on a really large canvas and then cut for each guitar and painted over, so each example s a bit different. This was my second, as my original was stolen when I was a teenager.
Ibanez Universe UV777BK 7 string, another Steve Vai model. It's an earlier example with the better Lo-Pro Edge Bridge, rather than the later bridges put on these models.
Since both of the above have Floyd Rose Locking Tremlos and are a tiresome in their upkeep and are not possible to quickly change tunings, I have a fixed bridge 6 string too:
Ibanez RGA321SPB, I have this one wired up with the pickups that John Petrucci was using a few years back on his previous series guitars (Dimarzio D Sonic at the bridge installed upside down, and a Air Norton at the neck).
And finally, I have a Ibanez SR655PBBLM 5 string bass. It was a "sorta limited edition" made a few years back to celebrate the anniversary of the Soundgear range. Ibanez's "official" anniversary editions were made by the "budget outsourced factory" of the Soundgear series, so the original factory decided to release their own one which was even more limited in numbers. It's a very beautiful finish, so I grabbed one, even though I'm not anywhere near as proficient on a bass as I am on guitar.

Here's a a shot of the entire family

              Left to right, JEM77FP, UV777BK, SR655PBBLM, RGA321SPB

Wow looks like a few of you have studied music! Incredible. Wished I had at least learnt the piano when I was young.

I picked drums when I was 9 or so. Played till 20 or so? Then I moved on to guitars, electric specifically. Been rocking out the 6 string since then. I "perform" in a church setting on a regular basis! Figured the new Jetta boot space will help with transporting my amps and guitars a little much easier..

I use a 1998 Les Paul standard with bigsby, 2008 PRS Mira and a 2000 PRS CE-22. My amp is a Ceriatone clone of a Matchless DC30 with a 2x12 Hame cab from NSW. I use a truckload of pedals as well, too many to mention!

I've played sax for about 20 years now. Gosh that is scary. Did classical and jazz stuff through school. Played in a Ska band when at uni and now do some hack jazz stuff and play in a function band.

Did Bachelor of Music at Sydney Conservatorium in classical singing. Sing a bit still but not classical stuff. More jazz and acoustic stuff now.

Work for an orchestra now in managing an artist development program. Sounds like I might come across some of you at an audition one day! haha

I've been playing guitar for about 25 years. Mostly self taught. I used to be into grunge/metal and played in a band around Brisbane for a few years in the 90s. These days i've chilled a lot and mainly just play acoustic - fingerstyle for the most part. Country blues, blues, old-time/traditional, blue-grass, folk etc. I have trouble finding people to jam with, i think because of my taste in music

My favourite guitar would have to be my '73 Guild F20. Nick Drake played a similar guitar although his was the all mahogany model (M20), whereas mine has a spruce top (i play kind of similar to Drake).

this is nothing compared to you guys, but i played drums through all of high school, after getting fed up with playing the piano in primary because mum wanted a neat hard studying little piano player she could use as bragging rights to her friends with.

so yeah, drums - like everyone in gen x, i was into playing grunge - pearl jam, nirvana (damn easy to impress people with, but hella easy to play) then moved onto stuff like pantera / some machine head when skills progressed. rudiments were where i spent much of my time, too.

quit drum practice to focus on study for the end of high school, after about 3 months of learning the beginner lessons of jazz drumming. seriously, hard rock/ metal is PISS EASY compared to jazz drumming - wish i'd stuck with it!

incidentally, my favorite "popular band" drummer is a jazz drummer - danny carey of tool.
