After my experience with Barloworld lately, maybe VW would be wise to protect their brand a bit better.

Well, I'm not surprised that the things are as they're when in today’s world not many people don't want to pay for a good service and what is even worst, they're always looking for a bigger and bigger bargain. Yes you're very right, the market generally doesn't value service or knowledge and I'm not in the car industry but I imagine it's been a race to the bottom for a long time now.
On the other hand, there is no H***d*iWatercooled forum and, for the most part, Apple computers are not sold on price.
So, I reckon VW consumers might be a little different and like Apple consumers value good design, service and knowledge.dibdib, dubdub
