Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm in NSW and we can buy our Green Slips apparently cheaper if you have your other insurances with the one company,
But i was shocked today when i paid my renewal $411 with GIO just for the Green Slip , My Daughter who lives in QLD and her Green slip is included in her Rego only pays $313 with Suncorp /GIO, So now I'm confused how come QLD pays nearly $100 less than we do here in NSW?
So what do all the other owners pay for theirs ?

I didn't think Green Slips got the discount...

Anyway, yeah, they suck. Up from ~$300 a couple of years ago to ~$450. Sadly this is one of those things that you can't "vote with your wallet" since all the companies are pretty much the same leaving you with no choice (other than to illegally drive an unregistered, uninsured vehicle, which is by no mean recommended (or clever)).

Rego was up this year too by 10% or so too

Sadly the Medical levy take up a large chunk of the total... when it was brought it was on the basis that it would add "approximately $20" to the average green slip... of course since it's a flat 17.5% of the total it keeps going up and up too and the Govt haven't bothered to lower it (and why would they when they can blame the insurance companies for raising pricing and pocked more $$ as the base gets increased).

...and don't start me on the cost of number plates...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Queensland has the best number plate system. NSW, on the other hand, would rather gouge annually. I'd consider changing the style of plate (using my current combination) but then I'd move from not having to pay annually to having to pay annually for no actual gain. It's not like it costs the RTA anything extra after the initial build of the plate.

Actually... NSW RTA have come up with a way to sucker a little more cash from people like you:

            Products and Pricing

In short, you can now pay $400 once off to have your plate restyled (people with an annual fee pay $200). Essentially it's an extra sucker tax they are applying because they can. Still, it means you can get your plates re-made and not have an annual fee. Something I will consider for the next car.

Excellent (sort of). Might actually consider it now.
