In Qld your highway patrol cops will ALWAYS book you for whatever they can find. Thats what they do. Your 'normal' cops can be more lenient generally speaking. They often can't be bothered writing a ticket as they were no doubt on the way to the next coffee stop..

It's funny reading this... I have been pulled over MANY times when I have blatantly done something wrong, by both Highway Patrol and GD's, and I have all time but one had my fine reduced, or let off all together... Just on this Anzac day long weekend, with Double Demerits in effect, I got pulled up by a HP car for doing 16 over in an 80 zone, given a warning, then let off...
      My tips:
Pull off the road as far as you can, or even into a car park, this makes it both safe for you and them.
      Put your Hazard Lights on.
      Turn your car off.
Have your licence ready for them when they get to the window.
      Be extremely polite.
"If can't get behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them..."

I've had 2 general duties cover my car with guns (slight exageration as they weren't drawn but they were close at hand) and driven away 3 minutes later with a "have a good night". I can't imagine that if it was hwp it would be the same.

Got a good mate who is a cop - GD - and the stories he tells about what he terms the cowboys are pretty bad.

Still, not as bad as my run with a defective, sorry, detective, who I had to make an official complaint about...

When you get into your 5th decade it's much easier to get let off with a warning. I think the cops don't like booking someone who looks like their dad!

Can't see how it's fair that you can have the ticket waived regardless of your driving history. It's a stupid fine to begin with, I mean what harm/bother is it causing to have your old label on your car, so long as you have the current label visible.

Have always held police in high regard but this officer has changed all that.

he was a traffic cop........not even the real police like traffic cops.

According to a friend who is a Qld Transport inspector, it is to stop people from displaying stickers from the bottom of the screen right up to the top. This confused the inspectors who were visually targeting expired regos prior to in car data base access. Transalation is " if you do something wrong, we will hit you with a stick, if you don't comply, we will hit you with a bigger stick" Their slogan should be " we make revenue our friend"

Really? You seem to speak with some authority on the matter.

I got pulled up the same way about 3 years ago ..... but hadn't paid the rego yet. The papers were on the front seat, but I hadn't "got around to it". The officer asked where I was going, and silly me told him the truth, I was going back to my office. Apparently if I was on my way to a Motor Registry I would have been let off. From memory the fine cost me $900, no demerits !!

BTW, the fact that it was a 2yr old Golf GT, me being over 50 and my only fine in about 20 years didn't get me off

I always pay my rego(s) on time these days.

like with anything there are good and bad that you come across....
I have had occasions where the fine was reduced etc or waived completely depending upon the circumstances etc...
but one occasion has always stuck in my mind......
I was travelling home from my gf's place one night in her car that was purchased about a month prior. I had just pulled into the street where i lived and was pulled over by a cop about 3 houses from my place.... he checked my rego and told me the car was unregistered etc... i argued and gave him the paperwork from the purchase to state that the car had just been bought etc... he stated that the computer system showed my car was unregistered so i would be fined for driving an unregistered vehicle ($500 odd at the time).
He then proceeds to take off the number plates and tells me i can collect the number plates from the police station once i have proof the car is registered... He tells me i have to leave the car there and collect it by tow truck to take it home!!! I said cmon i live there (pointing) cant you watch me drive it up on the front lawn????? Nope... not supposed to drive it at all.... feeling rightly pissed off at this point my smart ass side was itching for a go.... so i asked if i could push it there since this surely would not constitute "driving" it???
he raised an eyebrow at me and said i could drive it home and he would watch...
anyway the next day i had to sort it out with Vicroads.... man... what a headache... the car was in my gf's name... so i cant get any details out of Vicroads without her written consent.... A phone call later and the *ahem* nice lady told me that the car was in fact registered and gave me documentation to prove it.... when questioned about why the cops thought it was unregistered she went away and came back to say that "their computer system was down last night so ALL cars that were checked for registration would've shown an unregistered state" !!!! WTF???? I told her about the plates and she stated that it was illegal for police to remove them from the car as technically they were Vicroads property etc.... i looked at her and said "I'll give you the phone number of the police station and you can tell them that!!"
So armed with the paperwork from Vicroads i went to the police station and explained what had happened etc and the guy reached under the desk and retreived my plates.... no sorry for stuffing you around... no nothing.... the fine was cancelled and that was it...
so yes there are some asses out there... but there are also some that can be understanding.

I'd lodge the complaint through my local MP and wanted to be compensated for the lost time and so on. It would take a fraction of the time that you've lost.
