Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey guys... So after finally deciding on getting coilovers, I checked all the legalities I could find, and rang an ACT Transport engineer, then as my car is registered in Qld, I fired of an email to Qld Transnsport to get a clearer explanation on their rules...

    This is the reply I got today...

    Dear Mr T

    Thank you for your email enquiry to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (the department) regards coil over suspension fitted to your vehicle.

    Coil-over suspension is able to be fitted providing it is a direct replacement component and utilises all the original manufactures mounting points.

    *These mounting points must also provided sufficient structural support for the increase loading which coil-over suspension can impose. Additionally, the fitting of coil-over shock absorbers must not foul any part of the underbody such as brake line or chassis/subframe.*

    The installation of the coil-over shock absorbers must not interfere with the manufacturer's specification's or the continued compliance of any applicable Australian Design Rules applicable to the vehicle. When fitting coil-over suspension the department recommends that you engage the services of an Approved Person engineer to ensure the suspension meets all the relevant standards.

    The department permits you to lift or lower your vehicle's ride height by adjusting the suspension. The rebound travel measured between the rubber rebound stop and the corresponding metal stop (or the extension of the shock absorber for vehicles without a rebound stop) may be reduced by no more than one third (1/3) of the original manufacturer's specification.

    This is classified as a "minor modification", and does not require formal written approval, and can be modified by approval granted by the booklet (All about modifications to motor vehicles) this booklet may be found on the internet at:: Home (Department of Transport and Main Roads), and search for "All about modifications to motor vehicles" refer to page-5.

      That's about the same as NSW when I hunted up the same Q&A a little while ago.

      There is NO engineering required, if it's outside of those specs, it's illegal. Period.

      If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        Good to know. Was never too sure on if they were legal or not, never really bothered me. Might be a little lower then 1/3 out though

          I got pulled over by transport here a couple of years ago and they didn't know what a coilover was...
          I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

            I had an interesting time when I was trying to track down this info with the NSW RTA. Seems their engineer couldn't (or didn't want to) answer the question and referred me to a one of the authorised engineers that are able to certify stuff. I called a local guy and had a great chat, as a local business owner he was very helpful and seemed to know his stuff.

            I'm trying to hunt up the old post where I went through some of this, but can't seem to find it. I did find this thread which talks about the proposed changes to the ADR for suspension mods

            Which was the point I was going to make. There is also a number of errors in those listings just like this one including some which say factory options are illegal. From memory it only runs from about 2004 onwards anyway, anything before that is on paper... somewhere...
