  • Recode FOB Key at Dealer?

Lost a key for my Multivan so wanted to get another one. Rang a dealer who said between $500-$600 for a new key and it would take a week to get it from Germany.

If I source a key elsewhere (much cheaper) and get it cut at locksmith can I then take the key to the dealer with my original key and have them code the new key to work? Obviously I will have to pay for the service but I'm not sure if they can actually do it or is something that is done in Germany using the VIN number of the vehicle.

    Any alternatives?

Best info I have got was from a UK ebay seller. Very helpful and informative. I'm going to order the two button remote from him but decided to get the key with chip from a dealer. He does have the keys with chips for some models but he was unsure if he would have one that would work on my 09 Multivan. Seems VW have got extra clever with there encoding on the later model vehicles so its not as easy to go non genuine.

          Update for those interested.

I received my new fold out key blade from VW, it opens the door and starts the engine but the engine shuts off immediately.

I then received the remote half of the key from the UK seller. I followed his instruction so sync the remote to the car. So it now locks/unlocks the door remotely.

Final stage now is to get the chip in the key coded to the immobiliser at the dealer next week.

Will report back when that's done.

Finally got the car to a dealer for the immobiliser coding. Cost $77 and about 30 minutes. New key works perfectly.

What was your overall cost for this ? Wouldn't mind getting an extra spare for my Mk5 GTI if it's not crazy $$$.

Glad to see it's worked out, I know when I needed a spare key for the Mk3 (which is a CHEAP key in comparison) the blank was ~$70ish from the dealership, had to be cut at a local locksmith (by me) for ~$15 then I had to take it back to VW who coded it for ~$120.

Sucks, but it's still much much cheaper than loosing your only key and then trying to replace it

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

                  Remote from UK was $48
                  Key From dealer was $187
Coding at Dealer was $ 77
                  Total $312

You maybe able to save even more if you can buy your key blade with chip from the UK if they have one that works for you car. They were not sure if their complete key could be coded by a dealer here for my van though so I went with a genuine blade/chip.

                    Hi,
I did a similar thing to above. I bought the basic key from the dealer $185 and a key from ebay - VOLKSWAGEN REMOTE KEY 1J0959753CT GOLF POLO TRANSPORTER | eBay for around $85 pre-cut.

His email address is keys@tynesidemotorcompany.co.uk I even got my key cut by them. I did not believe it would work, but thought I would try. Took a photo of my key emailed it to them, paid an extra 5 pounds. When it arrived I compared the keys and thought it would not work, but it did.
I programmed the remote side of things using the following utube video : VW / SEAT / SKODA remote coding - YouTube and it worked. I then needed to get the transponders programmed

I got all three keys programmed at the same time for $77 from Bill buckle Brookvale NSW.

So knowing all this I would now buy ones straight from this dealer in the UK pre-cut from a photo and just get VW to program it.

I hope this helps someone,as those keys are so expensive!
                    Cheers T

I was looking at a car magazine in the lunch room where I am working and there was an advertisement for Mr Minit (kiosks in most shopping centres) where they claimed they could provide replacement fobs for just about any vehicle sold in Australia. Might be worth a try.
