Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Good old Australia.

I believe it was 'Scared Weird Little Guys' Who sung: Come to Australia, You might accidentally get killed.
You are correct MR Mango.... Was the Scared Weird Little Guys. Just bomb your garage with your car in it with the doors open. But put an old sheet over the paintwork to protect it more so the roof/bonnet where the residue will settle. Then be sure to wash your car and Vac to be sure... to be sure...

OK hijacked for a second seeing as we are talking about the Scared Weird Little guys. I think this is almost my favourite song of theirs.

We're lucky in WA, we only get the Red Back spider that's of any real concern, and they're the only spiders I would ever deliberately squish.

I've been bitten by a red back in the right calf muscle when I was visiting WA, rang up the poison hotline, they just told me if I dont have any serious reactions within the next 20 mins I'll be fine. 20 mins later no serious reaction, but both my legs from the knee down were sweating non-stop for the next 5 days, was really unpleasant since you would wake up in the morning and your bed is totally soaked.

Huss, you were bitten on one calf but both legs overheated. That's bizarre.

Yep, bitten 3 times on my right leg, but both legs went into sweat mode. It is bizzare. I was sitting on a bench and put my legs under and got bitten once, at first i thought it was a sharp piece of wood stabbing me, then I went back, got bitten a second time, then done it a third time and stopped. 5 mins later it started to get itchy and you can feel the venom going through your veins, Flipped it over and behold a big fat mama Red Back.

So I've never been bitten before this incidence and i got 3 times the amount of venom so im guessing there not as dangerous as they are made out to be.

i've only ever seen one - when clearing a pile of bricks (those ones with 3 holes in them) in the backyard

huntsmen are my favourite - big, hairy & scary looking but harmless. have had a few in the house with all the recent rain. i have to relocate them to the garden as the Mrs isnt so fond of them

Your assumption is quite probably correct, I think very young babies and old, infirm people would be in trouble if they got bitten.

The first time I relocated a big hairy huntsman my legs were like jelly. I placed a tumbler over the BHH and slipped a piece of card underneath then set it free in the garden. That was many years ago, now it wouldn't be a big deal for me or the missus.

Had a few Huntsman spiders on cars over the years. The funniest (as it wasn't me doing it) was when a mechanic went to open the bonnet and it leapt out from underneath. Also they hang on very well up to about 100km/h on glass...

Haven't had any funnel webs on/in cars but have had many in the backyard pool when growing up. Always had to watch out for them before getting in to swim as they can live for a good week or more underwater (air sack created in their fur).

Hahaha. Don't worry I had a massive white tail on the side of my bed a couple of years ago. That had me worried about climbing in for a few weeks.

I hate them all... when it rains the huntsmen come in. When It's cold, the white tails and scorpions come in and if I don't surface spray around my piles of wheels or window frames every few weeks I get red backs. I've been bitten by a huntsman, it itched for months. I was bitten by a wolf spider, my whole hand went numb for a day.
I am generally a very gentle person, but I kill them all, when they come inside they are trespassing.
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...
