Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

When I was first looking for the perfect R32 to buy, I stumbled upon a few modified cars which at that point were a 100% no no as I had to buy a car that would not "upset" my father (even though it was my money, I still needed his "approval" in a way).
In the end I decided to sneak one past him and bought Big Yellow's R32 which was flashed and lowered and had an aftermarket exhaust. Dad eventually found out because I was bragging to colleagues about it and flipped out, talking about how irresponsible it is and how bad for the car it is (ignorance..).

Anyway, long story short, today I drove with him to drop his BMW into HP-F for a flash on his 530d (which is a tractor at the moment). Most ironic thing I can think of in my short 20 years of living so far..

Anyone else face problems with people giving you **** for modifying your car? I suppose this question would probably be targetted towards the younger guys who are under the thumb so to speak .

Looking forward to seeing the car tomorrow, flash offers good things for the diesel but I still don't think it will ever become a race car...Maybe i'll drop my car off for a dyno run after his is done .

Best thing to say to a person who has a problem with you modifying your car is '**** off, it's my money and I'll spend it how I want...' I don't care if it's my parents or some random, it's none of their business what I do with my hard earned...

Just about every male in my family and wife's family are into cars so they don't cause any grief. The only person I know who has told me not to touch my R is a long time family friend who is also a mechanic. He builds some tough motors for customers and also builds sprint car motors for his son. His is currently building an Ultima GTR race car with a supercharged 7.0 LSX Chev which dynoed at 1100hp at the crank. When I turned up at his workshop the day I picked up the R his first words were please leave it standard. I said of course then proceeded to tell his son what plans I had for the car.

The guys who serviced my 1st car (old Fiat) used to always tell me I was wasting my time and money modding my car. That didn't stop them from accumulating as many Lancia Integrales as they could get their hands on.

every car i have from now on will probably be getting mapped, but that being said...

i reckon many mods out there are simply placebo - you might dyno more hp, but they dont REALLY make a difference to how far you can pull away from your mates up over reefton spur...

map + partial exhaust + suspension.... THEN concentrate on weight savings, i reckon.

My father is the same. His main point is that the car companies spend billions of dollars on R&D and know what they are doing...

I point out that there is always a compromise between various factors to cater to the average Joe and I'm simply re-stacking the deck with my personal priorities in mind... sure that doesn't usually get us far, but what can you do.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
