i can attest to this. just sold a 1993 toyota camry v6 vienta. 307k km on it, still running fine. just needs regular serving.
also have to add hondas to that list. we still have a 1989 civic, 290k km on it. its our spare car, but fills in reliably whenever we have a car out of action

Well... 87% Toyotas are still on the road, only if they would come with that in other time than after they had the biggest recall in the history.

I am not surpised either, but if all you are after is whitegoods on wheels, then Toyota is for you, apart from a few particluar Toyota models which you can buy in Oz, as grey imports or second hand there is nothing that Toyota sells which appeals to anyone who enjoys driving.

I have driven many Corollas and Camrys as company cars and the only thing they have going for them is their reliability.

My '88 Hilux ute just doesn't stop, 340000+kms on it, no complaints about reliability here! Not fun to drive but very practical. If i was in the market for a 4x4 which was actually going to be driven off-road i'd have a Land Cruiser over anything else too.

            So true!

Even though they are not fun to drive the reliability is a big appeal for most people. Lets face it most people just want a reliable car that gets them from A to B. If you do most of your driving in city traffic it desent matter how enjoyable your car is to drive because if your driving most of the way at 30km/h then it dont make much difference what car your in, it wont really be an enjoyable drive.

The people that really enjoy driving sometimes just go for a drive for the sake of driving and those same people wont buy a Toyota.

I'm also not surprised, whenever a friend or family member asks me to recommend a used car it's almost always a Toyota or Honda. I also agree with the comment about vw's probably being on the bottom of the list, a friend has a mk3 golf and it's in the workshop more than on the road, I told him to get a corolla!

As far as reliability goes, you cannot beat a Honda or Toyota...no doubt about that at all...

Our family pet is a 1986 holden camira. 405k on the clock with only one clutch replaced and a head gasket replaced about 10years ago. It has snapped 3 timing belts... it is the only car you just stick another one on and away she goes. Only thing I can put it down to is regular servicing and a gentle life.

                    ...or Subaru.
We had the Forester for 11 years, our first Subaru was L series, we had it for 5 years prior to Forester.

The original Legacy speed record was set between January 2nd and 21st, 1989, with a Japanese-spec RS turbo sedan at the Arizona Test Center outside of Phoenix, Arizona. It broke the 100,000km FIA World Land Endurance Record by maintaining an average speed of 138.780 mph (223.345 km/h) for 447 hours, 44 minutes and 9.887 seconds, or 18 1/2 days. Pit stops were made every two hours with a driver change and refueling, while tire changes were made at 96 hour intervals, or every 13,400 miles driven.

In April 2010 Toyota sold its 5 millionth vehicle in Australia. Australia has about 16 million registered vehicles. 87% of 5 million is 4.3 mil. This means that about a quarter of all vehicles on the road in Aust are Toyotas.

So the statistic is 87% of Toyotas sold in the last 20 years. They've been in Australia for over 40 years though, right? So plenty of those 5 million will have long since died.

I reckon I'd believe that one in 8 cars on the road is a Toyota. Maybe even more.

True, but the vast majority were sold after 1990. Toyota were not a popular brand in their early days in Australia1960's and part of the 70's. I'd guess that at least 75% of their vehicles were sold since 1990 in Aust.

The word "guess" doesn't really have a place when it comes to testing the validity of statistics.

There are wild guesses and educated reasoned ones. One million Toyotas were produced in Australia by 1992. This strongly suggests the vast majority of the 5 million were produced and sold after 1990.
