Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm considering buying an Apollo Evolution, my local cycle shop will sell me one for $500. Is this the best I can do for that amount of money or should I look at something else? I'll mostly be riding urban roads and cycle tracks, almost no off-road.

                  Sweet rig for your money.

But if you are doing more on-road riding maybe consider a hybrid or flat bar road bike. Will be easier to ride, lighter and quicker for on-road use.

WaterBoy, thanks for the response. What you've said is pretty well what I was told at Canning Bridge Cycles last Saturday. They had one in the shop (can't remember the model) that was essentially what you describe, flat bar road bike with thin tyres. But the proprietor was more than happy to sell me the Evolution if I really want one. Trouble is, I DO want one, a work colleague of mine brought his in two weeks ago and it was NICE! I do have the opportunity to take the FBRB for a spin in the car park, so I may do that.

i ride my XTC1 (on the first or second page) with thin road tyers and its a hell of alot harder that a fbrb however its what i wanted/needed (racing xc again).
The guy i ride with has a similar bike to the apollo and is now looking for a road bike after getting one for his other half and realising how much better it is. as an indication i lock out my front shock when riding around town the paths here are not too bad (just got to look out for silly people crossing them with out looking or a pack of runners taking up the path)

I won't be racing mine, I'm more of a recreational rider and I'll be cycling along with my wife who isn't particularly fast. I don't doubt for one minute that a narrow-tyred bicycle is better for riding with organised rides at reasonable pace. I won't be joining in that sort of thing unless there's a local club that caters for the, ahem, more mature demographic.

if doing the frequent ride with the wife the apollo may be better beacuse you will be sitting uprite more making it a more comfortable ride (over the leaning forward style of a road bike) From what you have said a 'hybrid' style bike sounds best. Many brands have these at good prices. If you have not already checked them out TBE Belmont (on the RHS as you head out to the airport) has a good range and have been the best for service so far i have found.
