  • EcoMotors OPOC engine: High power density 2 stroke engine

Have any of you seen this "new concept" engine? Home | EcoMotors

The revolutionary opoc architecture of opposed pistons and opposed cylinders provides unparalleled benefits
    Opposed-Piston Opposed-Cylinder Engine
This patented design creates a ground-breaking internal combustion engine family that will run on a number of different fuels, including gasoline, diesel and ethanol. The engine operates on the 2-cycle principle, generating one power stroke per crank revolution per cylinder. It comprises two opposing cylinders per module, with a crankshaft between them, and each cylinder has two pistons moving in opposite directions. This innovative design configuration eliminates the cylinder-head and valve-train components of conventional engines, offering an efficient, compact and simple core engine structure. The result is an engine family that is lighter, more efficient and economical, with lower exhaust emissions compared with conventional designs. Here you can see this revolutionary 2-stroke engine in operation, which helps to illustrate the simplicity, elegance and compactness of its design.

Old Bill Gates has just thrown a fist full of money at it. The opposed pistons idea is pretty novel.

    Very clever!

Similar to the concept of the Napier Deltic engines of the 50's and 60's except much more compact and not needing the three crankshaft approach! I hope this development is more environmentally sensitive!

ooh, that's pretty interesting! i wonder if, with bill gates' money, they might get a leg up into the industry and maybe give electric power a run for its money?

hopefully, in the same way that vw's smaller-but-forced-induction-engines-yielding-more-power-with-less-environmental-cost engines can be tweaked for ''performance'', it'd be nice to think the same will take place with this style of engine design- that is, tiny engines, low consumption and emissions, but upper-end models still putting out good torque.

          Love the old Deltics!

Looks like a Commer Knocker engine... Similar to what was in the Cheiftan tank...

I love the Deltics, too. This engine seems more like the Commer 3 cylinder 6 piston engine, but without the rockers to transmit the power to the crankshaft.
Those really long connecting rods to the "outside" pistons on the OPOC engine seem a potential problem, both in terms of flex, and how they are connected to the pistons Also, the engine might end up being wider than the car!
