  • How do you tell friends "No, thats wrong"

A problem Im sure most people have had, is friends with, well rather senile cars thinking that a 'fully sik' pod filter or cannon is gonna give them "much better" power.

For example, I have a friend who beleives putting a 2.25" exhaust with a cannon is gonna make his 1.5Ltr lancer a beast. Apparantly a Pod will give it a lot more horsepower too

How have you told friends that in reality, bolt on mods won't really do that much?

Am I right in thinking that the best way to gain power is with head work, porting, cams and ecu remapping? Of course bottom end things (crank, rods ect) would help too, but can be a bit expensive.

Sorry if Im complaining a little too much, but people boasting about there Pods gets annoying.

Hmm if he thinks it will make a world of difference then I see your point. A bolt on cat back and pod/intake on a 6L SS does something though...same with something like an RB/SR series engine etc... unfortunately the lancer is none of these...

The point is it might sound faster, give a mild gain and give him a bit of personal satisfaction in modifying his car. Obviously there is a budget to match, and if he is going to be porting/camming the lancer, may as well just go 4g63 FWD

      Unfortunatly he beleive's it will....
I can agree that a Pod and bigger exhaust will make a differance with engines that were intended to be high performance.
The second I mention porting/cams, the reaction is "yeah yeah, but a pod and a cannon will......"

But I suppose if hes happy to beleive a 1.5 litre will make BIG power, then I guess I can bite my tongue.

Just tell him he is dreaming and leave it at that. Honesty is the best policy here.

I had a CC Lancer coupe once with a 4G93T.
Was putting out 200hp @ the wheels.
          4g63 is overkill.

He's better off selling it and spending the money on buying something decent. I would just tell him that thats what I think.
Then if he still wanted to pursue the cannon/filter thats his loss. You can only tell him what you think.
Is his decission, no matter how stupid from there.

My friend got a full exhaust/extractors and intake on his 1.3L toyota starlet and my 77kw mk2 GTI still pulled away from it everywhere. My bone stock 206 gti destroys it even further in every respect.

Absolute waste of money, if they really want to mod it do suspension/wheels/audio.

Tell him to put up or shut up with before and after dyno runs...
                Nothing to see here...

I don't have really close friends that are into cars.
The ones that are hear me say "that looks ****ing stupid dude".
Then they'd reply with "pfft, you like VW's... as if you opinion matters"

                    "Hey mate, no! THAT'S WRONG!"

If they don't listen, more fool them. Why is he driving a girl's car anyway? Maybe that should be your next question.

Get him to do a speed check before fitting the pod. Pick a quiet bit of road and from a standing start time how long it takes to get to 100k's. When he gets the pod he will think it's quicker (it's a psychological thing) but do the same bit of road test and watch his face drop.

That's when you tell him "I told you so"

Just let him learn his own way. Its not going to cost much even if he goes with an expensive POD, so maybe next time he will listen...
