Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Dexter's first bruise

    Three weeks old...

At the local shopping centre reversing out very slowly as we were next to a pole, Mrs Hawk said "watch the pole" at which point I stopped entirely and looked at the pole which was next to the drivers window (and never going to hit). We were maybe 3 feet out of the parking spot, next thing I hear the parking sensors go off followed immediately by a large thump which shook the whole car. No warning, no beeps getting faster, just beep beep bang!

I looked up to see a car driving back into the car space opposed and down one slot from our parking space. I moved forward about 2 feet back back into the parking space and got out to see what had happened and a women jumped out of her car.

    The damage:

So the light is toasted, but the real damage is in that rear panel which is now pushed in and the side panel which has a crinkle in it. What makes it even sadder is the extent of the damage on the car that hit us seems to be limited to the spare wheel on the back, even then...

    Close up:

It's now in the hands of the insurance company and has already been to the repair place to kick off the process. As soon as it's approved it can go in, only downside it we are off to Melbourne on Friday so it's going to be bruised for a little longer Once it goes in it's going to be off the road for a week for repairs

It's only a car, it will get fixed and will hopefully be as good as new... I keep telling myself that, it's not helping, but what do you do?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

So it was the other car's fault?

Seems like a suitable time to purchase some hella blackout tails

Unfortuantely all the reverse aid's in the world still can't eliminate every possible solution.

Sorry to hear it. Hope the other driver acknowledged the damage and fault and apologised.

          Not so much.

Just can't wait till it's all fixed, sadly looks like it will have to go in when I'm back at work, which means sharing one car, something we haven't had to do since before the kids. I'm sure we will survive, just means I have to either deal with (more) public transport and/or scab lifts with other people to the train station in the morning (which beats waking the kids up bloody early).

Especially when the other car can't see or hear the reverse sensors/camera, unless you put in some countermeasures* to fend off cars approaching in this situation there isn't much you can do.

*something like this would be the only effective way to ward off inattentive drivers under most circumstances, possibly illegal as the empty casings fall onto the road.
