MOST drivers believe a speed limit is not the maximum but an approximate indicator of what speed to drive.

So the majority of the same people believe that speed limits are suggested speeds, not limits. They're clearly idiots, and nothing they say about speed limits should be taken seriously.

On one hand; you have a group of people wanting to up the speed limit because it's safer.

On the other; you have a group of people wanting to lower it because they'll feel safer.

Shouldn't you just drive to suit the condition? I.e. if the gravel road is posted at 100, you don't have to go 100 along the road. You do what's safe. I thought that was standard driver practice (hazard perception).

i agree, most people SHOULD have learnt this when they past there test. (also in there 120 hrs of practise on there Ls in all conditions should give them the experience) people dont seem to understand. same when driving through water covered roads. Right out the front of my house it happens, there is signs up and everything, people power through it at the 60km limit.

I was always told the speed limit was only for perfect conditions, obviously more cars, rain, night, etc ment slow down.

Means that 97 out of every 100 admit to having broke the limit.....

would love to see the age group of the respondents... For a grey nomad towing a caravan across the country, 90km/h is totally acceptable (42% of respondent live in SA, which isn't exactly known for it's youthful vibrance - no offence). For anyone else that still possesses control of all bodily functions, it's a bloody silly idea considering late model vehicle specifications and distances required to travel from one town/city to the next.
