I had about 6 parking fines from 5 years ago that I thought had been paid and never heard anything until 12 months ago when a Sheriff knocked on my door to say I had to pay $3800!!!!!!!!!!! With in 14 days or arrange a payment plan. I had proof of paying the orignal fines however most of them were a few days late and had hence had fee upon fee added to them. I spoke a very reputable lawyer who said it would cost $20K + to defend and that I probably wouldn't win so just to pay the fines.....

So just make sure you keep a record of everything to and from them for at least 7 years.
