  • my fun ski shop encounter for the day.

in short- me and my sisters and dad are going to japan next week solely for the purpose of going skiing. its going to be epic. but my kid sisters needs new ski boots, so, of course, when dropping $650 and upwards on one pair of girls ski boots, one wants to go window shopping. here's one store we went to (p.s. melburnians it's bumps ski shop on glen huntly road. i'd ward away from there, not out of bitterness, but simply - this aint on.[from a snowboarding forum i frequent tri-daily] enjoi:

well guys, its no small wonder why we australians will go to places like backcountry.com and sierra.com instead of local reps. this happened just 8 hrs ago and is a perfect example of how some shop hoes here have no clue.

i went with my kid sis to a ski/board shop to try on ski boots for our trip to japan in less than a week. i had my little contour hd minicam. i asked if i could film. enter the madness.

the guy asks why i want to film. i tell him that i've been filming my kid sis trying on all the boots she has so far at different shops, just for reference, to gauge her comfort levels so we cover all angles from a try-different-boots-on point of view.

little prick then says he does mind, because i just gave away that we'll be looking at other boots at other places as well. i tell him that if we're going to drop a half grand AT LEAST on ski boots, of course we're going to explore options.

he then goes on to say that he wont let my sister try on any more boots, and yanks the boot off her foot and moves away. apparently this is because he has a "boot fit guarantee", without even asking if my sister skied before- she started when she was 3 yrs old, and she's 17. btw, he straight away picked the lowest price point boot.

****** looks stupid as i dismiss his boot fit guarantee with "yeah mate, you put a hair dryer into a boot for 5 mins then get the customer to walk around for ten mins, we know the score".

then, the little ***** has the audacity to turn around and say "well you've alluded to having been to other shops before and we want a guarantee that you will buy the boot in exchange for our perfect fit guarantee".

    lol!!!!!

owner comes out and asks what's going on- i dress mr. off-tilt DC cap down, illustrating his utter incompetence and highlighting the fact that yes, we know what we're doing re: skiing, and why the **** would we be buying ski boots in the australian summer when the temperature is 35 degrees C outside? uh, because we might be serious buyers who are going overseas soon?

owner tries to apologise whilst guy sits in background trying to look smug. i then highlight the fact that in australia, where prices for ski gear for our dismal, pathetic 2 month seasons are exhorbitant, we were more than ready to shell out for a frigging pair of girls ski boots and a pair of goggles, but the little felt fit to refuse a simple in-store fitting of more than one boot.

i wasnt met with any sarcasm or cynicism- it probably helped that i had just bought a sweet multi size wheel brace/ lug bolt changer from across the road and was holding that 1 ft piece of steel in my hand, but on an end note i simply told the owner that if it's going to be amateur hr when people walk in the shop and are ready to drop a thousand dollars on just boots and a pair of goggles, then it's no wonder he's so desperate that he's charging $599 for a simple effing 4square/ blend 15k jacket that can be had anywhere else in my city for atleast 30% off retail.

so yeah. i hope you enjoyed my rant. now situations with inexperienced and shortsighted shop bitches like THAT is precisely why where i can, i will buy from overseas retailers instead of local punters.

    cheers,

    scott

p.s. un-real. i've bought snow gear in utah, co, bc, aus, nz, and japan. never before have i seen this, it was entertaining! anyone else with a bad shop-beyotch experience?

Not a good experience, but possibly a bit harsh. It's the off-season here; shop owners know they'll not sell much and, if they have experienced, knowledgeable staff, chances are such people are overseas atm enjoying the season the Northern Hemisphere. So they usually have themeselves plus some low cost juniors around. Not good, but true

Also, I do think you'll find shop owners in many different fields will be rubbed up the wrong way if you arrive with videocam and start filming, even if you ask permission.

the pleasure of spending money in the australian snow industry eh???

unfortunately with boots, buying off the net is very risky!

why not wait til you hit tokyo, end of season pricing will be happening there and range will be 100 times more

Although I sympathise about where you are coming from, I learned long ago to but cold weather gear from counties other than Australia. I would never buy ski gear from here in Oz if I was going to Canada, the USA, or Japan, simply because it is so much cheaper to get it from over there compared to Australia. In most respects, Australia is a ripoff for gear like that

just make sure she has a petite foot if you're buying in Japan.

I'm an 11 and never found a shoe that fit me in my 4 years living there.

                  It's even worse for females.

The other question in regards to shopping in Japan, is it possible to buy normal ski boots?

Or can you only buy ones plastered with hello kitty that smile and giggle while your skiing and then clean themselves when your done and have a hot chocolate dispenser built in and are in a colour brighter than the sun itself and who know what else etc etc etc...

Gots to lighten the mood somehow...

                    Cheers,

I actually prefer the high heels but the boots are handy for those days when you want to go jumping in puddles and general singing in the rain.

lol yes, preeny- i should have rephrased the ''in short'' bit to be ''in short, they's bitches''.

as for getting stuff in japan, it wouldnt have been too bad to get stuff there but we're pretty much flying straight from melbourne, doing to connect in tokyo, getting onto a bus in sapporo and going straight to the resort. we're leaving wednesday nite, getting to the resort at like thursday afternoon.

my sis found some good boots at altitude and at auski, so i think she will get hooked up there.

i understand the thing about me being harsh, but i have been in customer service before and i know when i walk into a store if one of the shop dudes is having a bad day, but this guy was just off the chain- really, really, really rude and uncooperative.

boots is the one thing i always get at local stores, just so i can have em heat moulded etc - its worth the extra dosh when it comes to boots.

as for hello kitty gear- dont under estimate the power of hello kitty global enterprises pty ltd:

I always find in a situation like the O.P described, the best thing to do is put away the roll of cash you were about to spend in their store, politely say "f*ck you" and walk out.

makes for a shorter story too...... TIC
