The father in law has one of the old WD TV boxes before they had ethernet, works reasonably well, but I see it more as a plug in a memory stick to watch a move, then remove and copy a new movie to the stick sort of device rather than a keep all your media on that HDD thing...

Seems to be a bit painful to cycle through large libraries... like the few TB's I have

The Apple TV interface is pretty slick, it's been a while since I played with that. Initially HD wasn't supported but I think it is now with some limitations.

Like I said, HD is limited to 1280 x 720 and even then only if converted just right. I have a couple of converters which seem to do a half decent job too. Reality being that there isn't a lot of content about anyway and where there is downloading it is just crazy when it's 5GB+. For example a 576p file with 5.1 channel sound is about 2.5GB for a movie so 720p or 1080 is going to be HUUUGE!

Again, I'm happy to show people it running if they want to come around and have a look see.

Yep, HD has a lot of bits. There's plenty of content out there, it's just moving it that presents the challenge.
