Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I like Subarus but I've never owned one. I have a good friend who is a Subaru fanboy through and through and have driven most of his rides over the years. Nice enough cars but lacking in character and build quality. That said, I still have a weird itch for an 04 STi.

I too have a soft spot for Mazda. I had a 1986 626 for my first car. Velour trim and electric everything. The poor thing copped a lot of abuse from learner & p-plate Mat but it never complained. Ended up selling it to a 16yo girl who thought it was awesome coz it had a cd player & loud exhaust hahahahaha

Not saying I agree with that summary, but thats what most people think IMHO.
Agree with that completely ..... whats more is that most VW owners don't actually go to Subaru ... its usually the other way around .....

          And even if so its smaller/cheaper VW => better/faster Subaru => better/faster VW ....

and BTW Toyota is slowly taking over Subaru atm .... more than 20% shareholding and climbing ......

I agree, as Subaru seems the most 'European' of the Japanese brands.

But after having owned two Libertys that ran faultlessly for almost 300 000km, it came down to Subaru not representing decent value for money anymore.

Ideally I was after an MY01 Forester GT but insurance was a scary prospect, and anything late model was still too expensive for someone like me who doesn't drive their car so much anymore.

So to me, the switch from Subaru to VW was because VAG represented a similar reputation for reliability and performance as Subaru. I may well go back to a Liberty once chunks of depreciation have been knocked out of the MY04-07 range, as they will be a far better second-hand prospect in a year or two.

Ideally I'll shoot for a Bilstein-equipped GT Spec-B wagon. Although an '07 STi wagon sitting in my garage wouldn't be a bad thing, either!

Best mate and his missus have one. To me it's just boring. The interior is SOOO cheap. That's where Subaru is a let down IMO. The interiors. They (used to) make decent looking, very well performing, reliable cars, but the build quality and fit/finish is crap compared to VW.

Thanks guys, I think that's answered my question. Hadn't thought about the flat 4 that was possibly the initial attraction away from VW to Subaru.

Personally, I've never been attracted to the earlier ones and had too many friends that have recent models that have high oil use problems for them to be seriously considered.

A few years ago I was going to buy a WRX, however it wasn't until we went overseas and were forunate enough to higher a brand new Passat and just fell in love with VW.
Like 'Rocket' has mentioned I too think WRX interior is cheap and nasty for the amount you pay we just didn't think the quality was there.
So, now I have been a GTI owner for 12mths and everytime I see a Subaru whatever the model I think how glad I am we didn't buy one! VW all the way babyyyyyyyy! [/QUOTE]

Call me crazy but I'll take involving driving dynamics over an ordinary interior anytime (Mitsubishi Evo, anyone?)

And while early Subaru build quality was robust rather than spectacular (although I never had any major reliability dramas with either of my Libs), I drove this during the week and while the interior surfaces aren't particularly nice, the fit and finish is quite comparable to VW in pretty much every other area.

Completely anonymous styling (which is just a nice way of saying 'ugly as h3ll') but fantastic to drive (innovative push-button hand brake, too)

We have 3 Subaru's in our house.

                        03 Forester X
                        07 Liberty 2.5i
                        09 Impreza RS

When deciding on the latest car, we didn't even give VW a look in at the Golfs because of the build quality issues in the mkVs. Dad was after something reliable, with a great drive train, and after ~9years of driving awd Subaru's, a fwd car wasn't going to cut it.

For the record, we have never made 1 warranty claim on any of these Subaru's, build quality is excellent.

The interior does look quite bland yes, but there are NO RATTLES at all.

How can you say the fit/finish is crap when the mkV and Polo forum are full of fault/problem threads????

A mate of mine has a black 08 Liberty GT wagon with a few subtle mods. It's really nice car. He's not a fan of the new model though so he's contemplating a black R36 wagon for his next car. I'm doing all I can to convince him that it's a very good idea.

Subaru's drive nice, handle good, go well and rarely have mechanical issues..

But they look like arse and i don't like them.

Easy. I don't drive a Polo or a Golf and therefore don't frequent those forum sections. I speak from experience only. And I compare cars in the same class. I.e. wtf is the point comparing a Liberty to a Polo? LOL!!!
