Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Private plates?? who/what and how much?

So private plates look cool and of course make your car go faster!!

So what are people willing to pay for plates related to there VW ???

What did you pay for your plate and how much is it worth??

Most plates are already gone from the list and you cant transfer plates from state to state, so really they are rare and worth abit of cash. Also its not just us V-dubbers that like plates, for example WHEN i get my R32 I would love a related plate but we have compertition with skylines for the list of R32options!!

    So who's up first............................................. ...........................

I always thought SCHNELL would be kinda cool for a German car but in the ACT they want nearly $3,000 for them or something stupid!

They shouldn't be more than a once off payment of a couple of hundred IMO.

I have seen lots of plates go for upward of $2k. But who pays so much to buy those plates? Sure there are a few very wealthy people but they generally dont go for the same plates as the rest of the population. They probably pay for plates like F430, BENTLY, CEO, VIP or something along those lines.

I agree with Rocket36, if its any more than a couple of hundred I wouldnt even bother.

Even personalised standard plates (ie you choose what your plate says within the stock parameters) cost an annual fee in NSW these days. It's a joke.

I've got ROB76C from before the annual fees (on the Outback, not the Bora), and they can't charge me the fee on them because they were taken out before the annual fee was implemented, so I'll likely never get rid of them - as much to make the RTA miss out on money they shouldn't have had to start with as anything else. Even customised stock designs are a few hundred a year I believe, custom selections where you don't follow the standard patterns are even more expensive.

Tried to get HUD50N for my Dad for his 50th (surname is Hudson) birthday years ago, but someone else already had them.
          Nothing to see here...

QLD are one off payments too but the cheapest is $430, 2 letters 3 numbers or 3 numbers 3 letters, for the simple ones and $2300 for "name plates" names etc !! and there are loads of "name" plates in QLD.

As I've previously said, I'm buying your plates.

Either that or stealing them. Especially once I get my R

Back on topic though: I have 090-OVW. Pretty obvious (PM me if you don't get it ). I used to have my name but everyone knew who/where I was. One time my best friend got a text message "Who's the old guy driving Alex's car?". It was my dad (not that I need personalised plates to have my car recognised ).

NSW is Ucking stupid.. rta wanted $200 initially then $440 PER YEAR to retain it.
I'm more than happy to pay $4-500 for a one of fee, then keep paying rego as it is... but seriously? WTF..

I prefer plates that are totally anonymous and hard to remember. One day it may just save me from getting caught for doing something I shouldn't have (not that I would ever doing anything illegal )

If your plate is really easy to recognise and remember you are making it easier for a member of the general public to dob you in if they don't like what you are doing, and as others have observed, your friends and rellies can keep track of you (well your car) too much.

What would really suck is paying heaps of money for a plate you really liked, then some low life steals your plates and you then have to hand them back in and get some new ones (in some/most states you're not allowed to keep plates after they have been stolen, as it creates too much trouble for the police having two sets of the same plates floating around, with one set in the hands of criminals).
