Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Got a lift home in an Evo 8...

And wow, just wow. This thing was ridiculous, easily the fastest car I've been in. I usually walk home from work down the one road, but tonight got a lift with one of the drivers (pizza shop).

Went round the block, there were some nice straights, roundabouts. This thing flies, go out of a roundabout in 2nd, pulls really well, then brakes hard for the next corner. The bov is loud when you floor it, but nice when you don't.

Only mods, filter, exhaust, bov, coilovers. It's dead quiet in normal driving, the coilovers aren't at all harsh, the exhaust is just for performance gain as it's not loud, the cabin with windows up is quiet, NO rattles! The awd makes it so stable on the road, way better than any fwd car I've been in to date.

I was so impressed by this car. To think I once thought they were just cheap track cars! I can see why people buy them. The owner often tells of thrashing most other cars on the road and I well believe it. If you haven't had a good run in an Evo before, go do it!

    Just thought I'd share

I fell in love with the Evo 6.5 and 7.
All the newer ones just don't have that aggressive look.

I loved the TopGear UK Evo vs Brittish Army challenge.

Never driven one but i would love to have an Evo7 after the Tig

Evo 6.5 Tommi Makk edition (TME) are by far and away the best kept secret. they are car-killers on the road/track and can STILL be had for $25K for a great example. have owned a modified WRX prior to the oiler and i can tell you a lightly modded TME will blitz anything. not just beat, but blitz.

of course, we are talking about two cars that are chalk and cheese in our VWs versus a dedicated designed-from-the-ground-up-with-but-one-purpose car like the Evo's. i'd buy one.

haha he traded that in for a Jeep Cherokee, $45k well spent for a 23 year old....

He should've got himself something awd and turbo. Cannot beat this combination. I see alot of people spending thousands trying to get their fwd's to handle well and get all the power down, and it's still no where near how good awd is.

Before today I thought they were just a tacky track car, bang for buck with the substitute of quality.

          But I was wrong.

looks like we have a new AWD man. might have to change your title there mate

they are great cars aren't they? as a WRX driver i never liked admitting it, but the Evo's are better.

haha there are 3 Subaru's in my garage here at home, so I fully understand the great benefits of an awd car, they are great.

Yup. The "Rally cars" for the road are great cars. I drive a modded STi and they are quick, go round corners like go-karts and the AWD inspires a lot confidence.

The down-sides? Every "P" plater wants to race you and having a little one in the back - it gets tedious, boring and downright frightening sometimes. Cop cars tend to follow you, you always get stopped when they're breath-testing... and so on.

I was actually in the market for an EVO X and was well on the way to do a drive-in drive away deal. The EVO X has a small boot and I need something bigger.

With that said, 5 years of STi ownership and absolutely no regrets. I would buy another car like it (i.e. EVO) however this time round something a little more sedate...

I got a lift in an R32 GTS-4 with a 700+hp RB26 in it the other day, and wow just wow. I couldn't stop laughing the whole time, it was the most ridiculous vehicle I have ever been in!!!

I hated the driveline vibration in the Evo 9 as I felt every revolution so yeah it was let down by that. Saying that the 6 TME is a very special car I look forward to driving soon

The Evo Lancer is based on the bog standard Lancer - highly modified, yes, but nowhere close to "designed-from-the-ground-up-with-but-one-purpose".

There's no doubt that it's a quick car, but its humble heritage shows very clearly in the cabin interior - cheap plastic, etc.

From a quality perspective, undoubtably. On a track though (particularly one with lots of corners), I wouldn't be so sure.
