Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • low fuel + parking on incline = problem!

so rocked up to my brothers house on the weekend, and as i pulled into his driveway my reserve fuel light just came on.

a part of his driveway has a bit of an incline, if i had to guess maybe around 10-15 degrees.

left my car (mkv gti) there for about 5 hrs...went to leave, and couldn't start it!

had a feeling it had something to do with low fuel and slope, and after a quick 30 sec call to jmac, he confirmed the design of the fuel tank has the draining point in the middle, and therefore all the fuel was sloshed up the back.

had to go buy a jerry can and fill it up.

    learn something new everyday....

Your family are not having a great run at the moment with fuel delivery in your cars! LOL

Couldn't just rolled it off the incline? I'm sure you thought of that, but I'm just asking....

I was always taught (and still believe) that a car should be filled when it hits the quarter mark to avoid picking up the crud in the bottom of the tank. Also on the off chance you have to dash off some where at a moments notice you know you can go just about anywhere without having to stop.

That in comparison to some people I know who have run out of fuel more than once... I once had a conversation with these same people saying that their Ford XR8 (brand new at the time) should go further that it really says (ie okm to go still has a little reserve to allow for stupid people...) They informed me that they know it doesn't (a few times). These are the people who can get in the car with 16km to empty and decide that the 5km to the local shops and back is just fine without stopping at the servo.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

That's a perfect description of Ford owners.....

How can a MKV GTI owner run out of fuel? Beats me. $50 to fill up from around 1/4 tank left.

haha. yeah...i did. didn't help. could also roll it down the hill...but next flat spot was a good 50m+ away and i didn't think it was safe. plenty of blind corners and crests.

            jerry can did the job.

When you put it like that it makes more sense...I was going to say the same thing Maca did otherwise hehe.

My mate's commodore does it on uphills as well. He's been given a ticket before for parking the wrong way on the side of the street because he's so paranoid hahaha!

that is true on some levels
but in my time ive opened up plenty of fuel tanks (for in tank filters and pumps etc...)
and havent come across on yet that has made me think "wow that dirty"

and on my vr i opened it up & drained the tank and gave it a good clean out and it barly put a spec of dirt on the rag and thats with 150.000kms on it

so i personally wouldnt be to worried about it but as you said it is always nice to have fuel in your car incase of an unpropared journey

although filling the fuel tank adds like an extra 50 kg's to the car.. thus making it less efficient. THINK OF THE ENVIROMENT
