Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

One reason to call especially on a highway is that its very dangerous. I dont have roadside assist so i wouldnt call lol

My uncles guys were coming home from the racetrack one night (after being told only to drive in the day) and got a flat on the trailer. They called and asked him what to do he said keep driving i dont car if you destroy the rim, get off the highway. Anyway they didnt listen and called NRMA. While they were waiting they jumped over the barrier and were standing on the hill when all of a sudden BANG!

A semi driver who was apparently on something drove right into the back of them. He was following the tail lights and thought they were moving and ended up writing off the 2 race cars as well as the tow car. If the guys had of tried to it themselves then they would have certainly been killed

"What happened to you? How'd you get so dirty?" "Yeah got a flat.. Bit of a pain but i changed it. Took me 15 mins but far better than waiting for roadside assist.."

If you need to know how to change a tyre, then why not know how to service your car? That's ridiculous! Knowing how to change a tyre should go into the same basket as filling up the washer fluid, checking the oil.. Hell it should be part of owning a damn car!

Good god some people are limp wristed. And if you find this post offensive.. It's probably aimed at you.
      Thats exactly it.

Hell, even in the Army, if you cant change a truck tyre by yourself (both males and females), you don't pass your course.

I think some of you guys still don't understand the difference between not knowing how or having the capability and just not doing something.

In all likelihood, I could whip all your arses in a tyre changing competition (especially if it included the tyre repair as well) but I can understand why people choose not to & call road service.

Yes, my standard VWwc issued, 52kg wife also knows how to change a tyre but in most cases she'll just ring road service & go and get a coffee.

Yes well.. I guess i'm going to have to agree to disagree with you and leave it right here before this thread turns nasty.

I think the most important thing everyone's missed, is why there are several guys all dressed in white (I can excuse the military dude)

I sometimes see people sitting inside a (presumably disabled) car on the edge of a highway or freeway (maybe waiting for road service to come and change their flat tyre ?) and I wonder if they realize just what a dangerous position they have placed themselves in.

I'd much rather keep driving (slowly) until I can get a reasonable distance off the road (if it wrecks the tyre then so be it), then I'll change the wheel myself (partially because I'm an independant cuss, and partially because I can't be bothered waiting for road service to turn up).

Did you realy have to go there? Why didnt you keep your e-mouth shut instead of trying to insult my gf?

I would throw insults back at ya but i think its enough that just about everyone in this thread is having a larf at you and every other abled body person who calls road side assistance to change a tyre.

This is almost getting out of hand.

But, you dont need to be a gym junkie to change a tyre. about 80% of it is your technique i reckon. I can change the tire on a full size truck or bus without much worry. I cant actually lift the tyre up and carry it round, i need to use a certain technique to get the job done.

When my Gf got her 1st car one of the 1st things i taught her to do was be able to change the tyres, check all the fluids in the motor and change/clean spark plugs. She is by no means a weights lifter, but when shown a the correct technique she can get things done herself.

People need to get out and try things. I hate the, just call someone to fix it for me attitude that exists today (esp in sydney, rest of NSW isnt as bad, prob cos roadside assist isnt as easy to access).

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what the big deal is. If I change my tyre and the guy next to me calls Roadside Assist, how does that affect me? More importantly, why would I care?
