Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • TSI/TFSI Confusion

As many of you know, VAG has caused great confusion with the TSI nomenclature for engines. Originally, the TSI name was used to describe the 1.4 litre turbo & supercharged engine whilst existing turbocharged engines were named TFSI (turbocharged fuel stratified injection). In their wisdom, VAG decided that they would change this and rename the TFSI engines to TSI even though they are still turbocharged FSI engines.

There have been a number of posts mentioning salespeople who should know their product better telling customers that 2.0 TSI engines are both turbo and supercharged which is simply not correct. I can accept that a salesperson may not know the difference, let's face it most of them don't know which way is up and all they care about is extracting as much money from the customer as they can, but when it comes to service department staff, I would have thought that their training (and hopefully their interest in cars generally) would mean they were better informed........sadly this is not so as I learnt today when I returned a loaner Jetta TSI (2.0 litre 6 spd DSG) after having some warranty work done on my Jetta.

The conversation went something like this:-

"How did you like the loan car?"

"Was good, drives a little differently to mine.....engine sounds different, DSG seems to upshift earlier than mine and doesn't tend to kick down as easily. Tell me, is this the later type engine than mine with timing chain instead of timing belt?"

"Oh no.....this is the TSI engine.....it has a supercharger and a turbocharger."

Knowing the 1.4 engine comes with 7 speed DSG I was confused and said "Oh really, is that the 1.4 engine?"

"No, it's 2.0 litre and because it has both supercharger and turbocharger it has better low down response so the DSG can upshift earlier and keep the revs down". It's 147 KW the same as yours but doesn't have the lag that the earlier engines had"

End conversation....exit promptly whilst trying my hardest not to burst out into raucous laughter.

This particular service advisor is a nice chap who trys hard but I was blown away by that, the dealership should hang its head in shame at such poor training and VAG who have created mass confusion and misunderstanding should do so too. I still think we should have "classic dealer comments" thread!

    Cheers

I'd love to know what he'd say about the Audi V6 TFSI (or is the badge TSI this week) - it is supercharged only

LOL funny you mention that, me and an Audi salesman got into a huge discussion about the new A6 "TSI".. Redbook says it's:
          Turbo Supercharged Intercooled
While the sales man said it was only Turbocharged. I kept bringing up the whole "Why would Audi, which is part of the Volkswagen family use the same badge but for a different style of engine?"

As you can imagine, it went on for a very, very, very long time...

Call me old school, but I come from an era when service advisors had an excellent working knowledge of the cars they were working with and would be aware of all of the known issues with a particular model and the specs of those models.

It is common these days for companies not to recognise the value of such knowledge thus it is increasingly difficult to get quality service. Of course, this is not restricted to the automotive industry, it is across all industries.

            End of rant!

            Cheers

I saying that - I've noticed in your signature you drive a 2.0 TFSI... Better change that to 2.0 TSI stat!

Still think the world would be a better place if the VWW members opened up dealerships around Australia..

When I was working in the car industry, I lost my interest in cars fairly quickly. 50 hours a week dealing with whingers beats the enthusiast out of you fairly quickly. Keep in mind that 95% of the customers weren't enthusiasts either and just wanted their car fixed as quickly & cheaply as possible & didn't give a fig if their car had a nuclear reactor under the bonnet.

When I realised that my career was ruining one of my hobbies (and paid lousy money as well) I got the hell out of there (took 11 years to realise) and went into a non-automotive field. Then it took 10 years after that to get an interest in cars again.

I don't blaim the service guys for not knowing every little detail.

i think now the distinction is in the lettering.
my jetta TSI (2.0 so really the TFSI) has a red "I"
i beleive the 1.4TSI's have a red "SI"
                  correct me if i'm wrong.

This is what I thought also but just to confuse the issue, this car definitley had the red "SI". I think it depends on which badges they have lying around on a given day!

Let's hope not eh... I know diesels with the TDI badge are either the Passat 125 or Golf GT. My loaner Multivan also had the TDI badging on it... So I guess the 125 TDI get's the red I and the 103's get the standard TDI badge?
