As many of you know, VAG has caused great confusion with the TSI nomenclature for engines. Originally, the TSI name was used to describe the 1.4 litre turbo & supercharged engine whilst existing turbocharged engines were named TFSI (turbocharged fuel stratified injection). In their wisdom, VAG decided that they would change this and rename the TFSI engines to TSI even though they are still turbocharged FSI engines.
There have been a number of posts mentioning salespeople who should know their product better telling customers that 2.0 TSI engines are both turbo and supercharged which is simply not correct. I can accept that a salesperson may not know the difference, let's face it most of them don't know which way is up and all they care about is extracting as much money from the customer as they can, but when it comes to service department staff, I would have thought that their training (and hopefully their interest in cars generally) would mean they were better informed........sadly this is not so as I learnt today when I returned a loaner Jetta TSI (2.0 litre 6 spd DSG) after having some warranty work done on my Jetta.
The conversation went something like this:-
"How did you like the loan car?"
"Was good, drives a little differently to mine.....engine sounds different, DSG seems to upshift earlier than mine and doesn't tend to kick down as easily. Tell me, is this the later type engine than mine with timing chain instead of timing belt?"
"Oh no.....this is the TSI engine.....it has a supercharger and a turbocharger."
Knowing the 1.4 engine comes with 7 speed DSG I was confused and said "Oh really, is that the 1.4 engine?"
"No, it's 2.0 litre and because it has both supercharger and turbocharger it has better low down response so the DSG can upshift earlier and keep the revs down". It's 147 KW the same as yours but doesn't have the lag that the earlier engines had"
End conversation....exit promptly whilst trying my hardest not to burst out into raucous laughter.
This particular service advisor is a nice chap who trys hard but I was blown away by that, the dealership should hang its head in shame at such poor training and VAG who have created mass confusion and misunderstanding should do so too. I still think we should have "classic dealer comments" thread!
Cheers
