Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Lost my key

I've lost my car key but was able to get into my car via taking the key cap thing off and using my spare key that doesn't work with my car to open it.

After the alarm went off I was able to press the start button. I tried to assign my spare key to the car but had no luck. The spare key has been like that since I got the car two years ago.

Is there anything I can do to have the car accept this key until I hopefully find my main key? I have obdeleven if that helps.

My car is a 2016 Passat

Hold it up against the point on the column and make sure it has a new battery as they go flat whether you use them of not

I did exactly that and was able to start the car and once I replaced the battery I was good to go.

As I would like another key, I was quoted around $1300 from my local VW dealer. Couldn't believe how much they wanted. I could possibly get a new key through my insurance but I'm not sure what my excess is so I had a look online and found quite a few second hand keys. So my question is assuming they could be programmed for my car, what MHZ frequency do I get?

Well i was quoted $450 for one for a 2011 Passat do dont know where yours comes from.

You cant use a non Factory one AFAIK as they have to be programmable to the car.

I presume its the remote that you poke in the dash to start car. Ask Kamold on here he is the Guru on that stuff
