  • Frazza's RB Golf R Build Thread

Welcome to my build thread, the aim with my car is to do mild factory like modifications to enhance the look, feel, and driving of the car.
You won’t see any Big turbo or radical suspension changes but I do have a few things in mind and hopefully I will be able to get them all done.

    First off “The Car”

MY11 Golf R, Rising Blue, DSG, Sunroof, MDI & Bluetooth, RNS510 SatNav with Dynaudio, 19” Black Talladega’s, Recaro Motorsport seats.
I was lucky enough to buy this R as a cancelled order so not only did i not have to wait for the car as a bonus I got the Recaro seats and the Dynaudio. At the time i don't think i would have been brave enough to order the car with the Black 19's so i'm glad they were already optioned as i absolutely love them now

My first mod: In dash Garage Door Remote

This was something I had installed in my EVO X MR and I wanted to do the same in the Golf,
the good thing is that you can buy a factory looking switch from www.carstyle4you.com. DIY Thread HERE I finished it off with a Blue R logo in the centre, doesn't do anything but look cool

    Black R Centre Caps

I didn’t like the way the chrome VW centre caps looked on the Black wheels so I set about updating that.
The end result was that good we decided to starting making them and selling them, now you can buy then from HERE

    Gloss Black VW Badges

Again keeping with the theme of gloss black on the car I replaced the front and rear badges with gloss black ones,
I really love the way it enhanced the cars looks. I also added blue vinyl to the inside panels of the front badge to give it a unique look, for the rear I did the same with a blue vinyl circle down first, then put the badge on to make it look like the body colour.

    Rear

    Gloss Black exhaust tips

I didn’t really want a full exhaust system so I decided to just replace the factory tips with these Gloss Black ones, they look so much better and they actually do give a louder exhaust note and DSG phart.

    Maniacs DSG Paddle Shifters

Next on the cards were some updated paddle shifters, initially I bought some alloy S2T shifters but after fitting just one I was very unhappy with the feel of them,
I kinda lost the factory “click” if you know what I mean, so I settled on the Maniacs and absolutely love them, best DSG mod you can do.

    Tune and Cold Air Intake

It was time for some more power and after a long and wide search I settled on the services of James at BPS Auto’s.
It was really nice to talk to the actual person doing the tune and for him to listen to what you want out of it.
Soon after we added a Volant CAI from Tarmac Engineering and the results were awesome!

    Custom TT-S Engine Cover

I was very impressed with the OEM look of the Volant CAI that it left the rest of the engine bay looking a little unfinished as I decided to do some custom work on a TT-S engine cover,
it went so well I sold my original one and started making a few, a bit of hard work but the results are great!

    P3 Gauge

Again with the hunt for that factory look I decided to go with the P3 Gauge that is mounted in the air vent,
there is not many places to mount a boost gauge that I liked and after hearing all the problems with the Polar-FIS this was the only option.
I liked the way it offers multiple functions and the addition of and analogue input for the boost gauge to get actual intake manifold pressure.

    Boost tap for analog sender

After installing the P3 with the optional analog sender I needed a way of taping into the intake manifold so I could connect it to the P3 unit,
the ECS kit was at a good price with everything you need to do the job, I also liked the way it has the U clip to lock it in place. It can be found HERE

My car being a DSG i was able to put the boost hose through the rubber seal where the clutch booster would normally be,
makes for an easy install to the P3 analog sensor.

    R logo Seat insert

These badges are actually designed for the standard Golf R seats but the shape is very similar I thought id give it a go as you can’t but any for the actual Recaro seats.
I had to use automotive double sided tape to stick them on as the adhesive that it can with was not strong enough to hold it in place, not perfect but im happy with the result.

So that's my build thread, hope you enjoyed all the work that you see, please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Happy to help anyone with any of the mods you see above.

    Cheers

Chris - really enjoyed reading your thread. great photos too that bring out all the mods. will keep watching this one...

The garage door opener was my first mod too - like you I also bought an "R" button, but haven't installed it. Did you end up connecting to anything?

Agree with your comments on the FIS+. I am very pleased with my swap from the P3 to the FIS+, however mine has worked relatively well (just a couple of resets pulling fuse F24). Others however have had all sorts of problems. I suspect that the Autopolar guys are pushing out updates a little too quickly, given the breadth of VAG cars they try to service. They are very responsive however for any issues.

I have a Podi boost gauge coming soon (I hope) - will use your idea of going through the clutch blank for the boost gauge - assume it was relatively simple to do this?

Thanks boltor, I only just realized i hadn't put my build thread up here in VWWatercooled as i'm mostly on WVGolf.net.au.

Yeah the FIS+ is having some problems with it at the moment, it's seems to be mainly those who use all the functions and logging, no doubt they will get it sorted but for me i just wanted a boost gauge really, i use the VAGCOM cable and the laptop when i want to make changes or do logging.

I haven't hooked my R button up to anything, i just got a blank.

Ok another update, fitted all my LED gear, not real happy with the fit quality to be honest, few small issues, as a few have found the fronts are a bitch to fit, way too tight and i got **** inside the lens so then i had to make this little vacum to get the **** out. Rear were pretty easy but one didn't work first up so had to fiddle with it, license plate LED's were easy enough to fit but they are bloody loose in the housing so i had to stuff around with some padding so they would fit snug but at lease its all done.

Next was my EZ-Lip, this was a piece of piss, just cleaned under the edge and stuck it on, i am very happy with the results and the looks plus it can handle a few bumps and scrapes so i don't have to stress like i would if i got a carbon one.

I like the look of this lip Chris - i ordered one earlier today. I actually came across that company selling the lips a few weeks back but was a bit skeptical on what they would look like.

The front LED indicators are a bugger aren't they. I wrote Bold Sport an email the other day saying that they don't fit properly but haven't heard back yet. Have you got a dremel or a file of some sort? You need to grind down some of the solder blobs so they dont stick out so far. Once you have done that then they will fit.....mind you, when you pay good money for a product that is designed to fit the car - they should bloody well fit.
