Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yeah man, still on the 215/35/18s. The photo I posted two days ago is wound right down and still up on the hoist. Just after I took it, we lowered the hoist and we realised that front struts were coming up and through the chassis a good 5-10cm.

We fixed that by using the top hat things from the original suspension (between the struts and the body), and that worked well. By then we'd run out of time / daylight so the front coils are wound all the way up, which looks le crap. I'll wind them down on the weekend probably then get another wheel alignment. How much would changing the front height like that actually throw out the wheel alignment?

Edit: Hmm, rear's wound all the way down and it's not sitting as low as I want it to be.

(remember, the fronts aren't wound down yet)

Considering taking out the perches? That'll get me another 1 or 2cm, right?

dude don't take out the perches, just take out the lower locking collars and wind down the top collar all the way to the perche, it should give you another 9 to 12mm drop and keep everything secured. at least try it first and see what you think.

oh sorry guys missed that, single adjuster, if you were to remove the adjusters and leave the perche you would need to find a ring to keep the spring centered on the perche, I ran no adjusters for dub-stitute and there was lots of movement but it was only for one day, and when you jack the car only a small amount at the rear the spring falls out of the top mount only the perche kept the spring in place, so I would hate to see how bad it is with no perches the risk of the spring falling out would scare the crap out of me

Yeah man, the adjusters are all the way at the bottom. Wouldn't the weight of the car while driving be enough to hold the springs in place if I took out the perches? Hoping to wind the fronts down tomorrow, will post photo(s) when I have!

Yeah with the perches out even when jacked up the springs will still stay in there, so there is pretty much no chance they will pop out. I ran no perches for ages(till i got defected). I have the exact same coilovers and they ran fine.

Now the fun begins with problematic swaybar rubbing, Shaft rubbing on frame, axle bind, your tyre rubbing on pretty much everything under there ripping apart your fender liners....oh And the good ole "can't go through the maccas drive through cause i can't get over the speed bumps

haha but we totally love it! Looks the goods anyways mate, love that colour.

Wound down the fronts today, hella yeah! Wheel alignment / removal of rear perches booked for Thursday.

Just an iPhone photo for now; I took some better photos that I'll put up when I get my mac running again (magsafe/charger port died.. 2nd one in 2 weeks >.>)

Haven't had time to go do a proper shoot at a location, but here
I've also come to the conclusion that I need to buy some wheel spacers... 20mm? 10mm? What do you think, peoples?

looks awesome, and nice to know the rear springs won't fall out tho I don't think I can get enough drop in the front on mine to match the rear drop if I took my perches out .

Thanks man yeah haha, that's the one downside I found with the FK coilovers; they don't go as low.
Pretty sure it's sagged a bit already, this makes me a happy camper

It'll drop down 1 inch or so over the next 3-6 months anyhow when they settle.

You can put some 15mm spacer/adapters on the rear and probably some 8-10s on the front to bring the wheels out a bit further! Thats all its missing i think :p
                        What’s behind you doesn’t matter..

Looks pretty low. Rear wiper delete and a smaller antena should be on the to do list!

A to-do list is a pretty good idea, actually!

To-do list in order of importance (as of 7/2/12):
-Front and rear spacers; 20mm rear, 17.5mm front (or I'll need to roll the guards) [ECS]
-Front top mount strut bar [ECS]
-New OEM shift boot + knob [ECS]
                            -Rear wiper delete
                            -Stubby antenna
-Replace or clean front interior left door fabric
-Re-do window tinting; darkest legal (it's a bit scratched up on one window)

---------- Post added at 04:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:52 PM ----------

Also, how do you people with really low cars go about jacking your cars up? Do you drive it into planks of wood? If so, how would you do it if you had to jack it up when you're not home? Carry planks of wood in your boot or what?

Yeah slamps (slam ramps) are a must. I also carry a small piece of wood in my spare wheel well just in case.
