Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My '89 GTI 16v 2dr

thought it was about time i put up some pics of my car
its a UK import original 1989 16v, and slowly been doin it up and getting it to the stage i want it.
it has been a slow process as i only got my p's a few months back and have only had limited time fixing her up on weekends.
so far i've sprayed half the car (minor rust), new shocks, brakes reco'd, engine retuned, refurbed BBS RA's with polished lip, gearbox reco'd, interior refurbished - seats, parcel shelf, sound deadening in doors, and tons of other bits and bobs along the way

but what she looked like when i got her.... haven't thought of a name yet, any ideas?

and here's where she stands today

Nice one mate! Good original car there, i see it had the stripe all the way around it, i had a White '89 16V and the first thing i done when i got it home was pull the stripe off! Did you buy it off the original owners/people who bought it over with them from the UK?
Did it ever have the original 16V wheels with it?

yeah first thing i did was pull the red stripe off... found original silver tape underneath, so i bought some new stuff and stuck it on after respray.
its had four or five owners since it came to aus. the original owner brought it to NSW, then after him went to SA for about 12 years, now VIC.
the wheels in the top pics are what it had, but the seller had some RA's
since the engine tune by Heckrath engineering, soo much nicer to drive.. would love to get it on a dyno someday.

I'd prefer a 205, but would have to be T16

This may seem really random but does your Girlfriends drive a 60's bettle by any chance?

As far as I know there are no 205 T16's in aus. There are 205 gti's, but I don't think as many as the mk2 GTI, and the mk2 is a better car in every field (bring on the argument!)

And waterboy, I would hope not, I hate bugs!!

Very nice mate! I really like the 100% stock look. What's the interior like?

Also, the standard question: What did you use to blacken the trims?

As to the name, if the colour is actually Helios Blue, I reckon Helios sounds good!

Helios - (Greek mythology) ancient god of the sun; drove his chariot across the sky each day; identified with Roman Sol.
