    Still waiting on some mods to arrive, but my upgraded intercooler finally arrived last week. The factory intercooler on the B9 SQ5 is small, cheaply made (average quality core with plastic end tanks) and well known for being inadequate for cooling the inlet charge on the EA839 3.0T V6 engine. Audi cost cut here by using the same intercooler on the B9 platform for the base model 2.0T all the way up to the S models with the 3.0L V6T. I was originally hoping to use my stock B8 SQ5 intercooler which is a much better quality all-alloy unit, but unfortunately it would not fit without modification to the inlet/outlet pipes and the factory charge pipes on the car. So that idea was scrapped.

    After looking at the intercooler options for this car (Wagner, IE, AWE, APR + several Chinese clones) I decided to get the IE based on several factors.....i wanted a silver intercooler so you could actually see it behind the grill (which ruled out Wagner and the Chinese clones), the IE performs very well in tests, and also IE was on sale at the time. Looking back now, I would have probably purchased the AWE for several factors, even though it is slightly more expensive.

    Good: Perfect fitment on the car. Definitely a nice quality intercooler. Performs very well with logs showing intake temps either matching ambient temp or only being 1-2c over. With the stock intercooler, my intake temps were about 15-20c over ambient on a pull.
    Bad: its not raw silver finish as per all of the IE website pics. Its actually powdercoated a light grey colour. Also not a massive fan of how the intercooler mounts to the radiator as I feel this could potentially cause damage to the radiator if hitting a big bump.

    As mentioned, the AWE is a raw aluminium finish and mounts to the crash bar rather than to the radiator so in hindsight, the AWE would have been a better choice in this respect.

    Just came back from a weekend up at Coffs Harbour and the car performed flawlessly over nearly 1,000km's. Just about to tick over 80,000km now. The car has heaps of power and torque on the freeway and returns a quite decent 8.5-9.0L per 100km when sitting on 115kph on cruise control. This was the first big trip we have taken the B9 on since buying it and it performed really well. Around town the fuel consumption is between 13-15L per 100km depending on how heavy your right foot is.

      Wow, that’s definitely a massive difference in size and build. I really don’t understand why VW/Audi sometimes cut corners in certain parts.
      Golf Wagon MK7 (90 92TSI) - Mods: DQ250 swap (Stage 2), 110TSI turbo upgrade (Stage 2), Bilstein B12, 19" Pretoria, GTI PP sway bar upgrades (front/rear), full GTI tartan interior, GTI colour cluster, R Bi-Xenon headlights with AFS retrofit, GTI brake upgrade.
      More to come...

        It certainly is a big difference in size. I guess its simply an easy way for Audi to save a few $$ in parts, simplyify production as its the same intercooler for all petrol engines regardless of spec - and of course 99% of buyers wouldn't notice, understand or care. But its definitely an accountants decision rather than the engineers, as the engine quite noticeably loses power on hot days or if you are having a bit of fun with the stock intercooler. And these engines with the "Hot V" configuration (turbo mounted inside the V section of the engine) get super hot.

          Finally my wheels arrived after ordering them in October!! The original rims were all scuffed by the previous owner which is somewhat odd itself as the car has the self parking feature........assume they didnt use it or were just bad at navigating around carparks etc as the car spent most of its life in and around Chatswood. Im not a big fan of the stock wheel design so wasn't really interested in having them refurbished back to original specs - so started looking around for some replacement wheels. The car had 4x brand new Goodyear F1 Eagle tyres so I wanted to keep the tyres and get some new rims with a better offset, so no h3ktic fat stance wheels for me.

          I really like both of these Rotiform designs (links below) with the fake centrelock design, but they are out of stock everywhere and I even contacted Rotiform directly and they said they could not give me a timeframe for more stock as they are not a popular option in 21". Turns out that 21" rims in general are not popular - it goes from 20" up to 22" with only a very small amount of wheels being offered in 21" for some reason. The other downside with the Rotiform wheels is that they aren't quite the right offset for the SQ5 so I would have had to run a spacer so they dont hit the front suspension knuckle. So both Rotiform options were out unfortunately.

          So I looked on the Koya website as I had Koya rims on my previous Mk7 GTI and they were very nice quality and I really liked them. On first look I could only see one 21" option on the Koya website, but I did not like the design (too fussy spoke design and hard to clean). But then I found that they also offer a forged option in 21" which is a similar design to one fo the Rotiform wheels I liked....not easy to find as the webpage design for these wheels is confusing.

          This wheel is made-to-order This Price is for single wheel. Prices are inc GST Plus Freight .i2mnp7f-s{text-align:center;}

          My spec: 21x9 ET25 with the 66.6mm centre bore. Colour is ultra charcoal. (stock wheel spec is 21x8.5 ET34)

          Stock rims weight: 15.8kg each
          Koya rims weight: 11.0kg each

          4.8kg weight saving per rim

          More pics to come of the rims & tyres now fitted to the vehicle.
