Tailgate Tyre/Jerrycan carrier.

Hello All
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a Tyre/Jerrycan holder on the tailgate. Either the one adapted using VW's bike carrier or custom made. Like these photos.

Great idea for keeping an extra spare but one big thing to make sure of is the struts will probably not hold the weight so you may need to get stronger ones .

I was looking into the Terracamper tailgate holder, but the $600 euro delivery i got from them was a bit too much.

I decided on the oversized Seikel spare wheel carrier, and i believe a Fiamma bike holder should be able to carry a set of maxtrak and a Thule rubbish bin, and also allow the use of the rear view camera,

I don't think a bike holder would be strong enough for a rim and tire.. there is a fair bit of weight, it all depends on if the top of the frame can be reinforced and if the lower mounts are strong enough for the extra moment load on them

Another idea, i though of at the time is using a Thule 126cm ladder and modifying it.

At $300ish its cheaper than a fiamma bike rack, and you also could use it to clean the solar panels.

Im still considering it as a maxtrak and thule bag mount, i'm currently doing welding at TAFE part time and want to see how if i'm any good at TIG welding before i decide on either option.

Welding on a small hinged frame for the Maxtrak and Thule bag and still being able to use the ladder would be great option to have.

As Sunny pointed out, the gas struts may need to be replaced with a larger capacity unit, they are around.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the idea of being able to open the tailgate without having to swing out a tyre carrier as well.

Yes the gas struts definitely have to be upgraded.

The second photo showing the one using that adjustable tie down track looks possible to make. I think the track is held to the door with nutsurts and adhesive. It looks very neat.

This one is Canadian and is made by Gary Lee for the T4 tailgate. May be able to be modified for the T5. The swing-out versions he makes for the T3 are really well made.

The issue with having to swing open the gate on the bumber arm, made me look at other options as it would be annoying having to open it each time you want to access the rear.

As for the 2nd photo, your right, it wouldn't be that hard to make, it just looks like versa track with a mild steel (black powder coated frame with more aluminium versa track bolted/screwed with sikaflex onto the the steel frame.

The best thing about the versa track is that you could make up a heap of different brackets and use them when needed.

If i wanted to be really lazy i could just get two of the Thule ladders and weld supports between them and then screw versa track on to the frame, the bonus is that there would be 8 mounts to spread the load and a heap of time saved for making the main mounting system.

Well, I got the welder and grinder out and produced Prototype 1. I'm going on a trip and will only lightly load it to test it out. Just the Maxtrax and shovel and 10 litres of water. After I get back I will see what needs to be redesigned. It weighs 12.7kg so needs a trim to get rid of some of that. Also I can see why the overseas made ones have the weight higher up, lowers the NM's needed in the gas struts. Going this morning to get higher rated struts.

If you have the dollars Tyre Trek, 4WD, Rear Bar, Tyre Carrier, Jerry Can Holder, Tow Bar Mounted Tyre Carrier, Swing Away Mounted Tyre Carrier, 4WD Accessories, Australian Made have an unreal mount for spare wheel and two jerries! The plus is you can put it in the shed when not using it, when i start touring there is a good chance thats what i will be getting!!! I want it mainly so i can hang two bikes off of the spare!

Bryn, I used 25x25 with 1.6mm wall. I used a couple of pieces of 16x16 2mm wall. I will be replacing the lowest horizontal bar with the 16x16 to save a bit of weight. After building this I can see having the weight as high up as possible means lower NM gas trusts can be used. Might even put a new bit of cargo track higher up on the door so that would be a bit of steel I can cut off.

As I said I'm going to give it a try out and hope it goes ok. Might be a pile of steel a towns recycle bin somewhere but I hope not.

Saltd0g, I have a different version of that tyre carrier and I find it very cumbersome. Now the Tyre Trek does look a lot better. The carrier I have weighs about 50kg unloaded so that is a lot of weight hanging out the back of the van, then put on two jerrycans and a tyre is a fair amount of weight. The Tyre Trek appears a lot lighter than that and is easier to mount with the tightening bolt at the back, I need about a 400mm extension on the socket spanner to tighten mine.

I will persevere with the tailgate idea and see how it works or not as the case maybe. I saw the Tyre Trek after I bought mine but isn't that always the way.

I bought a Tiregate and modified it.

Its ok but clearance with tailgate when opening is very tight. I had to make shims up to avoid contact.

It was flogged out over time and flaps around a lot.
If doing it again I'd design my own using a trailer axle system like many tyre carriers on 4wds, but still mount off reece hitch.

Do you need to drill into the tailgate to mount this or does it clamp to the edge of the doorskin?

That Gary Lee version hooks over the top of the door and is tightened by the clamps on the bottom. I ended not going with that version as it was way too heavy so I discarded it and went with a lighter version.



The Airline Track/Versa Track attaches to the door with stainless steel bolts, nutserts and adhesive. Then the frames are bolted to the track. I only lightly load it, 10 litres of water, 10 of diesel when needed, Maxtrax and shovel. Worked well on the Cape York trip. I based it on this design. I

I’m ever mindful of having too much weight on it as the door hinges are fairly small.
