Morning all. I have a 2010 T5.1 bi turbo 4 motion 7spd DSG. It has had a rattle in the drive line when downshifting for a long period but is getting worse. Local Dealer diagnosed DMF failing and quoted $4300 parts and labour. Can anyone tell me if that is excessive or close to the mark ? Also does anyone know of a VW specialist on NSW north coast who handles this type of work. I have little faith in the local Dealer but not a lot of options. Cheers

Well that's a first for me an auto with a dual mass flywheel , I thought all manuals had the DMF and the DSG was a semi automatic with no need for the DMF . I just googled that and yes the clutches are bolted to a DMF , seems VW want owners to suffer even more these days with another expensive hit to the hip pocket when their smart ideas go belly up . Out of interest have you had the drive shafts checked ? My manual T5 had rattles so to speak in shift changes and the splines were the problem , apparently the toffee composition of the splines wont last long . Might be an idea to get a second opinion .Normally when the DMF is dodgy it is very hard to reverse up a hill , my DMF has been buggerd for over 10 years nearly . I only learnt about the mongrel DMF AFTER I changed the clutch plate etc so I was not prepared to pull the bloody gear box out a second time so I kept driving and driving and driving . So now with over 300000 km on the clock its still in there shuddering in reverse but some clever slipping of the clutch will get me out of any situation I may be silly enough to drive into

It's a DSG. They all have DMFs, because they're a manual gearbox once you take the electronics away.
I'd say that sounds about right for dealer pricing. Front subframe needs to be dropped and the engine supported (not easy without the factory jig), before the gearbox can be removed. DMF on it's own is around $2K.'07 Transporter 1.9 TDI

Hey sunny43.5, are the shafts on the dsg box troublesome aswell? Or just the manual box.

Anyway, that was timely but didn't cure the other rattle that I thought was the thrust bearing.
Pretty sure it's the DMF now as it is really starting to make a racket and affect gear changes.
It's going to the panel beaters next week and probably straight to VW after that!

Haven't heard for two days...............................said labour charge was $176 an hour though.
