Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Do VW Campers require Certificate of inspections?

The reason I ask is i just downloaded the QLD Rego Check app and entered the details on my van and it came up with a expiry date of the COI.

Do these things apply to campervans? Am i reading this correct that this only applies to campers over 4.5T

    Maybe read this page https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/reg...x.html#changes

Certficate of inspections are normally for heavy vehicles and yours would be the same as a delivery van or a car.

If you have fitted a van out as a camper it may be a change of type as per the link and will affect your insurance rating.

Similar to buying a van and putting lots of seats in and using it as a minibus

I would suggest you contact a couple of campervan conversion companies around Brisbane to see what the current system requires , better ringing them than sitting on the phone for five hours to Qld Transport being shunted from one department to another with a bunch of pencil pushers who wont know the real answer . The code for removal of seats is LK1 and is on the page in the link I provided

I had a a blue plate for that when I removed all but the front row from my 100 ser Landcruiser

Got a second one when I put them back 2 years later

Yes correct Hillbilly each time you change the seating or modify you must get a Certification from an Authorised Officer [I used to be one } . Once a van is modified it goes into the Qld Transport data base so any subsequent changes need to be recertified .Lk1 is for seats Lk6 for child restraints .

I think you are reading right,

i wonder if some one has put the GCM value instead of the GVM on the QLD rego paper work, as that would be the only way to get over 4500kg???

A 25ft motorhome is sometimes over 4.5T I know a guy who bought one and didnt have an MR licence. Said he didnt need it as Tare was under. I said Tare doesnt matter you dont go away empty.

He had to sit his MR to be able to drive it legally. (After he had driven it from Sydney to Brisbane with no licence)

Wouldnt be GCM as that doesnt affect the class of vehicle.

what i'm saying Hillbilly, is that someone could have used the GCM total weight and put it in the GVM total, which then would put it in the over 4500kg.

The GCM on a T5 would be the 3000kg GVM plus the towing Capitacy, which is 2000 or 2500kg for a total of 5000 or 5500kg.

It only takes a simple mistake of entering the wrong value in the box that can cause issues.

                  hopefully this gets sorted soon.

Could the 230 volt certification be the issue, this has to be done yearly doesn't it?

                    It could be anything

The only true way of finding out is to get away from the keyboard and go and talk to QLD TMR with the documents and certifications for the van. You will need an electricans certificate, a gas certificate and a current roadworthy plus current rego papers and any engineers certificates and blue plates if the van has been altered according to ADR modification rules.

GCM can actually be less than the GVM plus advertised towing capacity as well.

To wit , the current crop of utes supposedly with a 3500kg tow limit. Very few, if any, can tow that much if loaded to GVM without exceeding their stated GCM

                      Hey Craig,

Did you get this Rego issue resolved?

Not as yet, been busy pulling it apart and cleaning it and fixing things up how i like it. I'm surprised how filthy this thing is after 2 years.
More than likely i'll be getting onto it this week.
