Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Stuck in the outback- please help!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site as I'm desperate for help. My t4 linkage failed when on highway very remote and no phone reception. The bracket was totally seperate from the small geared shaft that comes out of gearbox and I could select no gears. I managed to slip it back on but had no nut but it allowed my to select 4th which I used to reach the nearest roadhouse. Problem being is that now the small shaft looks different as more is protruding from gearbox??? Any help would be amazing? Also the ball bush passes freely through the bracket?

slide the shift mech/plate back over the shaft and find the nut from another part in the car/engine bay. Just look at brackets holding other parts on that have 3-4 nuts and could do with one less, you make the judgement.
If the splines are stripped on the mech/plate then you're stuffed but looking at the splines on the shaft they seem ok.

I recko you just need a 13mm nut and a washer. Must be plenty around the van to do that job. Even if you robbed one of the case nuts that sometimes go around the gearbox casing

From memory the reason the shaft has lifted is that as you select various gears the bracket will lift the shaft to allow the internals to select the appropriate gear very normal . I think also there should be a rubber insert in that bracket that the ball fits into .
