Alternator help please

Is it normal for the alternator bearing pulley to have the belt pattern on it? My opinion is that it stops spinning at times and the belt rubs onto it. I have a very annoying screeching noise coming from this side of the engine once the car drops the revs a minute or 2 after startup. This has been going on for a yr now.. Any help will be much appreciated.

What do you mean belt pattern? The pulley itself has grooves on it where the belt sits on it. FYI: if you remove the belt, you need to check if the one way clutch is defective, also spin up the pulley and check for a noise, it's not uncommon for alternator pulleys needing to be changed due to noises, one way clutch seizing etc. Quite an easy job.

Hello mate You could place a long screw driver on each of the components you suspect and with your ear on the handle listen for the noise
If the noise is coming from the pulleys or alternator it most likely will be a bearing

I looked at new ones and its clean and black. My one looks like this i felt it and its smooth but has the belt pattern on it. The new one doesnt have grooves either

Sorry i wrote the wrong thing, i believe its the alternator belt tensioner pulley, well its attached to the alternator...

Um it sort of looks like the belt is on upside down mate that would explain the screeching . The grooves in the belt should match the grooves on various pulleys like the main shaft air con etc the tension pulley usually is on the back side of the belt as it holds the belt onto the other pulleys that's why your tensioner has the grove marks its on backwards . Question you say it has been doing this for a year has anyone serviced the van around that time ?

You scared the crap out of me, i just went outside and checked the belt and its got grooves on both sides. I did take it to a mechanic but said they couldnt find anything... I dont think he really looked for anything..

This is a normal appearance, something to note and do though - Google to make sure your belt is wrapped around each wheel correctly (this varies with what is installed), depending on the age of the belt, it may need replacing (they get hard and dry after a while). Also suggest you follow what was said above (screwdriver and test when no belt is on).

I can't recall seeing one of these belts with ribs on both sides when you look at the tension pulley it is smooth which would indicate it is supposed to run on the smooth side of the belt ? Dazed and Confused .
