  • T4 Steering rack oil leak

Our T4 TDI LWB has a persistant oil leak at the left end of the steering rack.
    What is the seal here?
Is this repairable with the rack in place or must it be removed?

    Thanks

They are rebuildable, but I'd send it off to a specialist to do.

If it's a Syncro, they're a cow of a job to do. You need to remove the front half of the tailshaft, bevel box, right front driveshaft, shock, rear engine mount, and both rack-ends to get the rack out.

There is a how to in the technical guides on the t4 forum but it's for a front wheel drive - and it still looks like a snot of a job.

If yours (like mine) is a syncro then I'd be inclined (like me) to persist with the odd fluid refill...until you need a new clutch!

The FWD ones are pretty easy to get out.

You take the rack-ends off, and it comes out pretty easy. Don't need to drop the subframe or anything like that.
