Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T25 1985 engine refurbishment / replace - help!!

    Hi all!

I've had my 1985 T25 Transporter for about 5 or 6 years and it has been amazing. After many long trips and I assume 400k+ kilometres on the dial (it's hard to tell, given it clicks over every 100k!), I had to take it off the road last year. The engine and gearbox need a full refurbishment.

I've had trouble finding anyone who would do the engine rebuild. VW Performance in Melb said I would be hard pressed to find anyone willing to do the engine rebuild the watercooled engine due to the way that the internals corrode - the last one they did cost the guy $8500. They said that the engines usually have to have the studs spark eroded out and everything replaced due to the corrosion and the job is a nightmare.

While I would have preferred to rebuild, I'm also happy to replace the engine with another. I just want to get her back on the road!

While I've found useful UK sites for this, it is more challenging in Australia.

Has anyone had an early model Transporter watercool engine rebuilt or engine replaced? How did you go about it?

    Any tips greatly appreciated!!
