Rattle,clanking noise vw t4 2.5tdi

Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone has had the same experience. I have what can only be described as a rattling clanking noise under the driver side front when I travel between 70 and 90km/h. I took it to a vw specialist and told me the cv and driveshafts were fine but the front passenger wheel bearing needs replacing, which I had already figured out by the noise it produces. Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to test the CVs for axial free-play, caused by wear.

Hold the inner CV, and try and turn the shaft separately, back and forth. If there's free-play in it, it's stuffed.

Is there any clunking when you take off or when you come to a stop the splines are made of toffee and are prone to excess slack .Check out the photos down the page this was my drivers side spline you can see how different the spline is from the outer to the inner . http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...n-94796-2.html

Okay I will retract my advise , just an idea .

Thanks umai and sunny for your replies, we took out the cv's 2 weeks ago to check the splines and they looked fine. As for the play in the cv I would say there wasn't any real play in them they looked healthy. Is it possible that it could be a bent driveshaft or would that be noticeable driving no matter what speed you were doing. The reason I ask is I bought the truck off a bloke who lived on a rural property and it looks like it had been bashed around a bit underneath. The pan itself was caved in, i bought it cause the gearbox and engine had been replaced and they had relatively low ks on it and she drove pretty well.

Grab a hold of the brake disc protection plates on the inside of the disc. Do they move? Even slightly? If the vehicle has seen rough roads then these plates are likely cracked or have had their mounting rivets fail...so they rattle.

Only one of mine rattles now as the other one failed completely last year and fell off...into the wheel.
