As I mentioned mine was out of warranty by 6 months.

Forgot to mention if you have had a replacement Egr and it fails again within 12 months all labour and parts for the job are covered under your parts and labor warranty.
Each to had mine in it was off the rd for 1 - 3 days , because my light would come on after a day or so of a new Egr they wanted to diagnose.
My last Egr I had to wait 6 weeks for it to come from Germany, my mechanic refused to put another superseded part in after 2 failing.
These Vw are bloody nice to drive when they are running as intended, but when something goes pear shaped, my wife and wallet are almost at breaking point lol.
Feels like we are doing the R and D for Vw these days, in this day and age things should not be failing at such low kms, but I guess there bottom line counts more, I would hate to see how many have had a new DSG installed. I have heard of 3 just while I was in the room at my dealer overhearing phone conversations, while I was waiting to be picked up.

That doesn't surprise me , the problem today is two fold first one is most car makers and their respective importers don't want to keep thousands of individual parts so they are more likely to keep whole components as its easier for them to fit . Secondly they don't call them mechanics any more they are "technicians "so they will more likely use a laptop of scan tool to check for a problem and in your case it probably came up with catalytic converter failure or fault so they just quote on the thing it tells them is wrong . Most times its a small part attached to a bloody great big expensive part !!
