My advice is to jump onto Volkswagens Facebook page , vent your spleen there and 2008 is not that old in my opinion . Like you I am a stubborn grumpy old bastard as well , it took me two years of getting under their skin but in the end they did do the right thing . Oh and ours was a 2004 T5 first one they came good after the van was 10 years old .

My last conversation was with the warranty manager at Bill Buckle Brookvale, nice chap who agreed with me that the peeling paint and subsequent corrosion was not caused by any external issue, ie. roof racks etc etc. He instructed me to go and get a quote for repair locally and he would submit it to VW. So the final decision is yet to be made. Quote to redo the rails is around $1k.

Interestingly he also noticed the damaged paintwork on my front bumper which was a result of a nudge, however the paint is flaking in huge pieces and obviously wasn't painted correctly (I had the bumpers colour coded when I bought it from VW). So he called the sales dept and asked where it was done, turns out they are a local mob who is now out of business so no recourse on that, but the guy who quoted said he may be able to bundle it in to the whole job to make it cheaper (will need a new bumper due to the time it take to strip the paint of mine!).
All in all so far a much better response from VW than I have had before. Always the optimist!

Ok, chased up VW warranty guy as I was sick of waiting by the phone, and yep of course it's all my fault. They were going to email the response straight away, guess I can expect that in a coupla weeks going by rapid responses to date. So about to start going up the food chain at VW I guess. I haven't been able to find the VW Facebook page, can anyone please point me in the direction?

Type into the facebook search bar "Volkswagen Australia". It just pops up.

There's a certain irony in the >78,000 "likes"

The trouble is Brad that there is are hard core people who cannot see beyond their blinkers in their eyes Vw can do no wrong . At one point in my dealings with them I sent photos of the offending part that caused all my problems to Head Office of VW in Germany . Amazingly the response from VW Australia before then was slower than snail mail from Au Post after sending the pics to Germany VW Australia responded within two days !! Apparently at the time VWA was in heaps of PR trouble here and it took complaints from us Aussies to head office get them to do something proactive . From memory around the same time VW removed the then current manager and shipped them away , then a new CEO came in with a big broom to clean up their act .

I agree mate. The arrogance and hubris on display at VW Aus is like nothing I've ever seen before.

Interesting, but typical of the service of come to expect from the team at Austral VW. Was told to go to the bump shop for a quote, so I held a glimmer of hope. Again waited patiently by the phone, no response so I called them yesterday to follow up. Said they'd been waiting for pics from the repairer, he took none. So they suggested I take some and send them to them. I reminded their warranty expert took some so could we just use the ones from the original claim. He "lost them", so could I take some. Forgot to take them this morning but they called me back today to say they "found them" and would resubmit the claim. Remembering of course that they submitted a claim about a month or so ago which was declined.
got a call back to say claim declined, but here's VW's number. So I called them, and imagine my surprise, no claim has been submitted, after a bit of time on the phone to VW the good folk called me again to send some photos. I innocently asked why a claim had not been submitted, they advised me of course it had, how else could they have declined it?????? Seriously, no wonder I stopped taking my car to those clowns ages ago for a service. Anyhow, I need to take some more photos, cos the lost and found photos were lost again.
anyhow, the good folk at VW called me back to say that a claim will be submitted, but no promises.
I had suspected all along that I was simply being humoured by them to get rid of me, I guess my theory has been confirmed

After a promising visit to Buckle at Brookvale and talking to the warranty guy (see previous comments above) I got a quote and have been waiting over a month for a call, nothing. Disappointing, on the other hand my poptop is fantastic!

Be great to see the pics of your poptop when you get the chance.
the good folk at VW also contacted me today as they need the pics, and also copy of my service history. I had to ask why they needed that!

To see if you've been a good little piggy and paid them lots to service your van....
I washed my van the other day and noticed the same thing. Peeling in the channel on the passenger side right at the front.

Well claim has been declined due to the age of the car. They are unable/unwilling to confirm the decline from VW in writing, which is an unusual business practice. Time for me to take it further...

I would suggest that if anyone at all has any peeling of paint to chase them up sooner rather than later.
